I'm not entirely sure it takes all that much longer to fly to Europe from Toronto than Vancouver. You may also notice the closer proximity to China, Japan, US west coast, etc, and the cosmopoliton...

I lived in Surbiton for while which is perhaps more comparable to Kitsalano than Camden, and there is no way (most) of Vancouver is anything close to being that expensive. And yes being in(-ish)...

We live just round the corner from a Catholic School on the N.Shore (Indian River), about 15 min walk down to the sea at Deep Cove, and literally backs onto the mountains for hiking/biking/skiing....

Anywhere on the N. Shore will be similar, probably a bit less than an hour (say about 45 mins depending on the time of day) Public transport isn't too bad way to get there now there is the Canada...

If you can afford it (which by the sound of your budget you can, depending on where exactly you want to be), then I'd say Deep Cove is a nicer area than Port Moody/Coquitlam.
