I don't really notice it as we've come from the Middle East and you get an even bigger mix of immigrants there, with masses of 'ex-pats' coming from India, Phillipines, Nepal, etc. In UAE I believe...

Think you've hit the nail on the head there - we did indeed live in a compound and go to a private school, so lived in a bit of a bubble. Going to American public school is much more of a culture...
