That's me in a nutshell. Never owned a smart phone, simple no frills cell phone does what I need it to do.

The only reason in my mind to get a top notch smart phone like an Iphone 4 or SamSung Galaxy is for the camera, but I opted to go for a dedicated compact camera a few months back.

I splash out on stuff I like, not what everyone else is doing/buying just for the sake of being perceived as a baller/hip/trendy/whatever.

Not begrudged at all La La..it was true back in 1999 onwards, I suppose it could be different now with the surge of super gadgets and super Malls etc.

Thank God places like ADNOC have a Grading System which means every nationality get the same salary. :)

Yeah. A bit pretentious to be making comments. But where I'm from 45 is still classified as a young parent.

I'm 30 and just about to be married. Kids are a few years off still so when I'm 45 my oldest kids will probably only be 11-12.

I think you have made the right decision of having kids at young age; now you can have all your life to enjoy while you are still young. I keep telling young people who want to start a family the same advice, to have kids and get over with. Young men and women are more resilience and full of energy which is ideal for the job of parenthood

Yeah but you know nothing of life.

When your kids ask a question, will you say 'Dunno - ask your teacher'?

On the flip side , one can't enjoy their 20s being single or as a childless couple.
It's just different strokes for different folks. Some want to be parents at a young age and some don't. So some will enjoy the path you mention and some will enjoy the path I mention.

Of course in the ME it is not unknown to be a granny in your early 30's as you can take a 12 year old wife. Though most people that have to work for a living have to leave it longer these days, certainly in the western world as we want the nicer (materialistic) things in life only working can bring.

Have you guys all seen the opening to Idiocracy? The middle class couple, both working, putting off kids till they are beyond fertility age, whilst the underachieving, low-IQ family keep producing sprogs to keep their lineage going, leading to a future run by morons?

The current birth rate in the UK is something like 1.8 now? Imagine a UK without immigration or single mothers. How many generations is that exactly before we become barren? When schools are closing down due to lack of pupils (as they've been doing already)

This concept terrifies me, but it's a not topic that you can discuss with many people.

The world is over-populated so fewer births overall is a good thing. Just a shame that it's not equally distributed.

......... and even if we could somehow uniformly bring the birth rate down to a sustainable and manageable level, the population is still in the wrong place. 86 pct of the world's population lives north of the Equator.

It's unequal even with some 65% of the landmass being North of the equator.

No ideal solution, but people still need to stop breeding so much.

When looking at population issues, you need to take a global approach. If you are going to argue that the world is over-populated, then you need to ask yourself in relation to what. If you argue that it is over-populated in relation to available resources, then you are wrong. There is plenty to go around. It is the unequal distribution of such resources that is the problem.

But then I've got 5 kids, so I would say that.

Once you pull people out of poverty , give them access to education and work towards gender equality, issues like overpopulation work themselves out.

This is so true. Look at Kerala in the early nineties... one of the poorest states, yet they managed to reduce infant mortality and morbidity rates significantly merely by increasing female literacy rates.

Interestingly, it was the only place in history that had had a democratically-elected Communist government.

You're right, and you are so wrong at the same time.

Yes - 7 billion people are not consuming resources in the same way Western countries are. However, as an educated Westerner with lifestyle expectations, having 5 children who will all consume at a massively higher rate than say someone in India, China, most of Africa is utterly irresponsible if you wish to save the planet's resources.

Now, before you/one goes on to say that China/India have incredibly large resource consumption, just remember where all the goods you/one buys are from... that resource consumption is not for the Chinese / Indians but for materialistic Western countries.
