What's your theory?

Re: What's your theory?
So today's MH370 news is that a "concentration" of debris comprising less than 1 item/sq mile has been found. ..... I wonder if they realise that they're searching within the Indian Ocean garbage patch?

Rumour, speculation and secrecy. Not the most encouraging of subjects....

This should go in the American Pet Peeve thread; it is annoying how news stories (presented by anchors) feature the same bloody footage on loop. As if we didn't get it the first or second time they ran the clip.

Still no debris.
Question for Mr Mikewot. So, in the transcript we have the crew confirming flight level 350. How do we know that was true, and that's the level they were at. Does ATC just 'take their word for it' as it were, regarding flight levels, or are the flight levels confirmed via radar etc?
Just wondering if things were already going amiss before the transcript even finished.

As soon as the transponder is switched off effectively ATC are blind unless they happen to have primary radar. But most countries are gradually phasing that out (except for the military) as we're entering an era of cooperative aircraft systems, they tell you where they are and what the pilot has entered into the FMS as well as roll angles, climb rates etc (Mode S).
When we introduced the latest' version of secondary radar (mode S) at the London Terminal Control Centre (handles Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton) many pilots were embarrassed as ATC could see on the screen what the actual speed was that the pilot entered into the FMS. Soon stopped all the porkie pies and ATC got the speeds they wanted.

Assuming that their transponder was still switched at that time then ATC would know the height (mode 3C) as the transponder transmits that data which is taken from the aircraft FMS.
