U2 were great until Bono's head disappeared up his arse, i think this happened around the turn of the century. Maybe it was the Millenium Bug.

Some valid points here - but I can recognise greatness even if it's not to my own personal taste.......... I can't bear Nevermind by Nirvana, but I can easily see why so many others rate it so highly, and why it appears near the top of virtually every 'all-time top 100 list' (or whatever) that has ever been published.

On the bands/singers in this list, I'd put Revolver ahead of Sgt Pepper (as I said) and I think Strangeland comes close to beating Hopes and Fears. Sticky Fingers? Exile on Main Street, I think......... etc........... etc............

Argus by Wishbone Ash (1972) and Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd (1975) are the albums I still listen to more than any others. Dark Side of the Moon was great in parts but a little too poppy in other parts for my tastes. Physical Graffiti (Led Zep 6?) also gets alot of playtime, especially Kashmir, one of their greatest tracks.

Absolutely, I understand that people like U2. I guess I can see why; because it's catchy and moderate poppy-rock-romantic sometimes stuff that appeals to masses.

Nevermind is a great album but like many things celebrity / showbiz, it's immortalized because of Cobain's death. Like Heath Ledger in Batman(?).

When they first started, U2 were arguably the best live rock band around, hardly romantic. The only band to challenge them in those days was Echo and the Bunnymen, who were also brilliant live.

Things change though don't they. One, The Sweetest Thing etc....they sold out to chase the dollar bills.

Much like Example has. He was quality, now; tenny-bopper heaven. Sell-out.

Oooohhh........... Argus. Good call from the mental man. Must dig that one out - it must be - quite literally - twenty-five years since I have listened to that.

Wish You Were Here a worthy follow-up to DSotM, too.

Some albums are accorded 'classic' status on the basis of one or two outstanding tracks amid a lot of dross (Transformer, Pet Sounds, Hotel California, many others).

On holiday a few weeks ago and they had what I presume was a ‘Best of’ Blondie album playing at the pol bar a few afternoons. I’d forgotten how many really great Blondie tracks there are, and what a brilliant voice she has – puts most of todays female ‘pop stars’ to shame, and in many ways a much better role model than them (although in many ways a pretty poor one as well!).

Been thinking about my top ten albums, and decided a top 10 artists was much more appropriate. So, in no particular order:

The Charlatans
The Stone Roses
Oasis
Biffy Clyro
New Order
Teenage Fanclub
Radiohead
The Chemical Brothers
Belle & Sebastian
Unkle/James Lavelle

Honourable mentions also go to Ride, Superfurry Animals/Gryff Rhys, Idlewild, The Smiths, Primal Scream, Elliot Smith, The Wu-Tang Clan, 2 Pac, Dr Dre, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio…and another good few, but I realise I’m cheating now.
