We don't wear the underwear just for men you know! There are times when it shouldn't match as it's the outside appearance that matters. For example, if wearing white trousers and a dark top, then you should wear white knickers and a darker bra. Underwear really shouldn't be seen under your clothes if you have any degree of class.
Edit> And far worse are nasty nylon undies. Yuk, yuk & yuk again

I think, actually, that "thong" and "string" may be the exception to the rule though - maybe because there's so little fabric. Pair of pants/ knickers/ boxers/ bikini bottoms... but "a thong"
