To be honest not enough is done to maintain English (anglo-saxon) culture. England is now a multi-cultural society but that does not mean that over 2000 years of Anglo-Saxon culture should be allowed to be forgotten. Our Celtic neighbours all celebrate their unique culture Why should we not do the same?

and what exactly do you suggest you do? that's the point. Some English people complain constantly about immigrants, but to all intents and purpose the whole nation is a nation of immigrants.... anglo saxon.... ok - so have some national pride - it doesn't need to be nationalism, just national pride. Why is it that England always looks enviously (it seems) on other nations that maintain a national identity?

England is one of the few countries that waving or displaying the flag seems to be a vulgar or antagonistic act.

It's weird.

I lived in London for 12 years by the way. And cheer for England when they play sport as long as it's not against my team. I just don't get why it all seems so messed up when it comes to "outsiders" and "national pride / culture"...

Nor should it be off limits to discuss immigration and the problems/benefits it brings to the country. Many immigrants bring a lot to the country and they should be made welcome. However there are immigrant groups who bring very little to the country and prove to be a burden on society and do little to intigrate.

the photo of the kid, however disturbing, is nothing to do with flag waving! Its a dutch football supporter with his face painted in the colours of the club he supports!

the point is the fact the through politics, war and most visually - football the English flag is associated with violence. Maybe soon the Italian flag will be too.

Ins - maybe MM can lend a hand, but England needs a huge overhall in communication - it's sh*t right now. England is great - but a lot of the world hates it. I don't, I'm married to an English lady and have lived in it half my life, but the fact is - the world seems to be indifferent or hateful towards it.

A lot of the hatred (too strong a word in most cases) of England is historcal and some due to the country's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nonetheless it is still a country where millions around the world aspire to live.

Of course sections of the existing population are going to be resentful of the present unprecedented levels of immigration. This is more to do with successive governments failing to iron out an effective Immigration policy.
Make immigration easier for skilled migrants. Bring in a system of easily obtainable work permits for unskilled labour. But make it more difficult for illegal immigrants to enter and remain in the country. And that includes bogus asylum seekers.

One of my good friends from law school recently finished a year working as an immigration case worker in Yorkshire. She had previosuly volunteered for Asylum charities. She entered the job believing the majority of Asylum Seekers were geniune. After one year of hearing indentical fabricated Asylum claims she realised that unforunately the majority of people she interviewed were in fact bogus Asylum seekers.
