Simple: assault is action which gives rise to a belief that you're going to strike someone. If I pull my fist back in a way that makes you think I'm going to hit you, that's assault. Battery is the actual strike. If I hit you from behind, that's only battery coz you didn't see it coming. If I pull my fist back standing in front of you, and then follow through with the punch, that's both assault and battery.
