Muse at 49?! Sorry - try again.

This is a "how-cool-am-I" list. Perhaps we should make our own poll in the Lounge? :-)

This is a list that is meant to cover all genres - but I think it's a better list in general. There's some overlap with the NME list - and some surprises.

The NME one is for the yoof and the rock/pop set.

Say what you like about Muse, they are fantastic live and Matt Bellamy is one of the most gifted performers and writers of his generation. He's also revived the time-old tradition of skewering politicians. If you only care about the music, Muse has the tightest, biggest-sounding three piece out there. If you care about lyrics, then Muse are much more relevant than most of the list.

but that's your opinion, I love music and I think they're shit. Wouldn't life be dull if we all thought the same ?

This morning I'm mostly listening to Broadcast and The XX

Definitely some real glaring omission from both lists for me, such as any of Biffy Clyro's albums, Belle and Sebastian's Dear Catastrophe Waitress, Deadmau5 - Random Album Title, Mystery Jets - Making Dens, MGMT - Oracular Spectacular, UNKLE - Never Never Land and from this year Florence and the Machine - Lungs.

Still, each to there own...

Mon the Biffy!

I'm NOT a U2 fan, but _Vertigo_ is curiously absent. A real change of form for them.

Mmm....don't know about that. Its actually a really good list, but as before - a slightly britcentric listing, with a few notable absences.

There are a few albums out there that probably outsold dozens of albums on this list, but the purpose of the list is to highlight quality, interesting, genre defining albums. I'm sure fans of U2, Coldplay, Beyonce, ect could feel that albums by these artist should appear on the list, but none of them have produced really great works(caveat - this decade), just popular.

it's debatable for sure - however the points made for why it was number one were pretty valid I think. Original (natch!), ground breaking, successful, possibly iconic etc... for me a good choice i think...

And now... XFM listeners top 10 songs of the Decade... very good list...

10
MGMT - 'Kids'
MGMT - formerly "The Management" are Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden and this track had been lurking around since 2005, before being re-recorded two years later for the debut album "Oracular Spectacular".
Download Kids from iTunes

9
The Killers - 'Somebody Told Me'
The first proper single to be released by The Killers in 2004. Brandon Flowers claims it has a "lot of sexual energy". Good lord.
Download Somebody Told Me from iTunes

8
The Strokes - 'Last Nite'
The saviours of guitar rock in the Noughties, New York's The Strokes made a splash in 2001 with this single, taken from their debut EP "The Modern Age".
Download Last Nite from iTunes

7
Ian Brown - 'F.E.A.R.'
FEAR is the first single from the former Stone Roses singer's third album "Music Of The Spheres". Each line features the acronym F.E.A.R., which is pretty impressive.
Download F.E.A.R from iTunes

6
The White Stripes - 'Seven Nation Army'
The first White Stripes track to feature bass guitar, this riff was everywhere in 2003. It's the first single from the Detroit duo's breakthrough album 'Elephant'.
Download Seven Nation Army from iTunes

5
Elbow - 'One Day Like This'
Spent more weeks in the Top 100 UK chart than any other Elbow single. Second track to be released from the Barclaycard Mercury Music prize winning album "The Seldom Seen Kid"
Download One Day Like This from iTunes

4
Muse - 'Knights Of Cydonia'
The only track in our Top 100 to feature galloping horses. This epic track closes the Teignmouth trio's 2006 album "Black Holes And Revelations".
Download Knights of Cydonia from iTunes Download Wonderwall from iTunes

3
Kings Of Leon - 'Sex On Fire'
The Followill brothers' biggest hit to date, it was taken from their fourth album "Only By The Night" in 2008. It was given a chart boost a year after release by being covered by one of the X Factor hopefuls.
Download Sex On Fire from iTunes

2
Arctic Monkeys - 'I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor'
Not the band's first single, but the one that brought them to international attention in 2006, it's taken from their debut album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not".
Download I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor from iTunes

1
The Killers – 'Mr Brightside'
The Killers beat off competition from Arctic Monkeys with over 60% more votes for their 2004 single. It's a bittersweet tale of unrequited love, written by singer Brandon Flowers and guitarist Dave Keuning.
Download Mr. Brightside from iTunes

To each their own... I've bolded those that I consider worthy of this list and of further listening. I'm also noticing the lack of Damon Alborn's Gorillaz project _Demon Days_ which I consider groundbreaking. In case y'all think I'm biased because Muse is one of my favourite bands, you will notice that I'm not including any of Snow Patrol's projects on this list, though I will say that _A Hundred Million Suns_ is miles better than _Eyes Open_ and that the Glaswegian supergroup the Reindeer Section's _Son Of Evil Reindeer_ is a great collaborative effort that deserves wider recognition. Muse's followup to _Absolution_, _Black Holes and Revelations_ is also well worth a listen.

Amy, who both embarrasses and delights her teenaged daughter by keeping up with new music.
