Michael Moore on the latest US gun massacre
Instinctively, I always feel I should hate Michael Moore, but he's made some very powerful and moving films, and I often find myself nodding in agreement when I read his stuff. Stupid White Men was, for me, a superb book.
Here he is again, blogging on last week's Aurora killings...........

I find Michael Moore way too sentimental..how he just loves to get people crying on camera. I have never been able to find his work very balanced either. Whats more interesting is this: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...s-7973439.html

In a lot of ways the most frightening thing about this is exactly that response from the general population. The idea that the situation, barring a lucky shot, in the dark, with gas/smoke and an opponent wearing body armour, would be improved by having more guns floating about in the panicked crowd is beyond absurd.
Almost as absurd as the suggestion that the founding fathers meant anything other than providing for a militia to resist invasion from Canada.
Or that , because he didn't commit suicide like all good nutters should at the end of their spree that he's actually a plant of the anti gun lobby.

Ironic though that Americans who quote the 2nd amendment as they need to be able to 'defend' themselves against those who may bear arms against them would be so opposed to other countries developing and arming themselves with nuclear weapons or other methods of modern 'defense'. Slightly hypocritical, no??

The idea of so many people having guns in their homes frankly scares me. More guns = more people get shot. The stats on deaths from shootings in the US bears that out.
Yes, there will always be a few nutters and a determind nutter or criminal can get hold of a gun if they want to, but the more guns that are in circulation the easier it has to be.

But none of it is acceptable. Guns are designed to kill people (or animals, but that's not why most are purchased in the US)) so owning one says you are willing to kill another human being.

Of course, but my point was about the principal - I have the right arm myself in the name of defense, but I'll stop others from doing so as they may threaten me, while continuing to arm myself with more advanced, deadly and costly 'deterrents'. The 2nd amendment, whilst being used by the NRA, when taken to it ultimate conclusion runs far more deeply in the American psyche.
