phones are so cheap in the uk cos they are heavily subsidized by the networks, including PAYG.
Here though you pay the equivalent of the UK sim free price as there is no subsidy, so a decent new phone will sting you for the full manufacturers retail price ie 2500aed or thereabouts

oh and these phones are not free in the UK, you just pay for them in installments called monthly charges and call costs. were they not susidized uk phone calls would be a lot lot cheaper.

Oh and yes Etisalat are creaming it in but thats just down to greed

I have an HTC touch Pro.

It's brilliant, however I would never buy it in the UAE. I bought mine in Singapore...where it was Dh750 cheaper.

Likewise....I bought my last camera in the UK, for half the cost of Dubai.

Shopping paradise....hahahaha!

I've got the Nokia N96, is not too bad apart from when it resets itself for no reason. Good memory, good camera, built in GPS - everything you need for the aspiring man about town.

I hear that Miss-Minx is looking for a new job (as well as a Cowboy hat), so it might even be cheaper (since she is apparently on a gap year and therefore classed as slave-labour student salary fripe or exploiting and overworking) that you could just get her to answer all your phone calls and then you won't need to buy a new phone as she could just handle everything for you - even your photos!!
