see i don't get that...you're or your (and there/their) are as ingrained as spelling your name...it's not something you need to check, it's just something you would never, ever get wrong...i find that type of total f**kwit mistake much more offensive than text speak which at least is deliberate...

Is this not where the problem lies with a lot of people, especially youngsters, where they just cannot be bothered to make sure spelling/grammar is basically correct?
I always try to make sure SMS/email/Facebook messages are grammatically correct. In my opinion it is just good practice.

And the other thing I hate is when they spell your name wrong- straight in the bin.

I also like people to have nice handwriting.

Indeed, because sms are so very expensive so we should bastardise our language in order to save a few fils and make ourselves look uneducated at the same time.

Stupidity and frugality all in once package...how efficient!

I weed out plenty of job applicants with spelling mistakes and look them up on facebook

( and be careful which football team you happen to mention on your cv )

I work for a French company and our official language is American English - I refuse to conform, twats

Personally I would never dream of using that "spellcheck" gizmo. If you cannot spell a word correctly then choose another. As for textspeak, it should be used by kids and teenagers only, not mature human beings.

What's wrong with checking the spelling of a word? How else do people learn?

exactly... it's a tool like any other. The problem comes when people rely on it to automatically correct their spelling, which is where the problems lie - "Its nice outside toady", for example. NEVER have auto-correct on. If there are too many red squiggly lines on your screen for your liking, just admit you're rubbish!

Spelling checkers don't always work !

I wrote a scientific report in which I included the phrase "pubic consultation", which the spelling checker passed…should have been "public consultation", which a member of staff picked up on…thankfully...before the report went out to the client!

Another example:

I have a spelling checker.
It came with my pea sea.
It plane lee marks four my revue
Miss steaks aye can knot sea.

Eye ran this poem threw it,
Your sure reel glad two no.
Its vary polished in it's weigh.
My checker tolled me sew.

A checker is a bless sing,
It freeze yew lodes of thyme.
It helps me right awl stiles two reed,
And aides me when I rime.

Each frays come posed up on my screen
eye trussed too bee a joule.
The checker pours o'er every word
To cheque sum spelling rule.

Bee fore a veiling checker's Hour
spelling mite decline,
And if we're lacks oar have a laps,
We wood bee maid too wine.

Butt now bee cause my spelling
Is checked with such grate flair,
Their are no fault's with in my cite,
Of nun eye am a ware.

Now spelling does knot phase me,
It does knot bring a tier.
My pay purrs awl due glad den
With wrapped word's fare as hear.

To rite with care is quite a feet
Of witch won should be proud,
And wee mussed dew the best wee can,
Sew flaw's are knot aloud.

Sow ewe can sea why aye dew prays,
Such soft wear four pea seas,
And why eye brake in two averse
Buy righting too pleas.

The language preservation moan is a favourite whinge at most nursing homes. If a language can be bastardised with an SMS, it isn't worth much as a language. Change is inevitable, although this may come as an unwelcome surprise to those who still yearn for the return of the good old thou and thee...

Make ourselves look uneducated? Wow, I had no idea I was supposed to set an example to my friends 24/7. I let my hair down around them. Doesn't everybody?

And if you can't decipher something as simple as "C U later", perhaps the stupidity that upsets you is your own. Are you upset with text speak because you aren't smart enough to keep up?

NOBODY uses text speak to me inappropriately. I guess I just command too much respect from those around me. Some old friends still text me using textspeak, but that's different.

Which reminds me- how much inappropriate text speak is actually designed to get up the nose of some laughable Victor Meldrew figure? I have a feeling that many get a kick out of inciting the pompous over-reactions of such fools.

There are also these amazing books called dictionaries.

As Hello.Kitty says, a spell-checker is a tool. Useful for awkward words or ones you aren't too familiar with, but more fool anyone who uses a computer spell-checker and then is too lazy to read through their own work.

C U later isn't too bad - you can even shorten it to C U L, and everyone would know what you meant...........

Mind you, "See You Next Time" should always be written in full.............
