sad they all have these massive chips on their shoulders...if you're working class, not a problem, go with it...but they all clearly have a problem...and the more scots they are, the worse it is...

Just my opinion, but a lot of the 'high-end' bars here are full of chavs/nouveau riche/skiprats (delete as required).
It's each to their own - give me a night out in somewhere like Barca club over Koubba any time. That's if I'm not down the pit.

well, I had a bit of a shock last night...ordered a mojito but the barman said oh we have a cocktail of the day, champagne mojito, it's really nice why don't you try that...oh ok, so we did, it was nice, we both had 2, got the bill...580 dhs....hmmm
Now, I don't know anything about champagne, never order it and have noooo idea about the price, but as a normal mojito is around 45 dhs, this completely took me by surprise. We did say something about it to the barstaff but apparently we were the muppets for not knowing how expensive it was going to be...

I honestly don't think it's inverted snobbery, this place has given me a decent living off and on for over 15 yrs.

I think Dubai has been spoilt by a certain section of expats and it's been given a bad name.

As a visiting friend from the UK put it " Dubai..it's a breeding ground for professional arseholes"

Very apt........!

I think MM's point is that whilst there are "arseholes" in very section of every society in every country, she, like me, gets fed up of the same old "you go for brunches/drink champagne/have a fab life..therefore you are a pretentious wanker.
It is defo a form of 'inverted snobbery" ..that whole "I am working class and proud of it and anybody else from a different section must be wankers"

I would not socialise with gypsies/drug dealers or similiar/uncouth or common people anywhere in the world that I lived.

I have friends from all levels of society..the 1 thing that binds them is that they are all decent, caring, fun to be with, and don't wear polyester lol

I do not give a bollocks what accent they have, what they do for a living (except for example above :-) ) or even where they live. If they are people that I get on with and enjoy their company then that is good enough for me.

I would like to know that if we go to a restaurant they know how to handle their cutlery properly, resist the urge to wipe their nose on their napkin or burb loudly at the table..... This is not a "Class" thing it is a respect thing.

Having said all that, my Grandmother, who was a very strict and fairly haughty lady who insisted on strict rules of etiquette, would always tell me "Class will out my dear." :D

Well I was brought up on a council estate in the UK, but I now live in what would be described as a fairly middle class area of Middlesbrough.

I cook egg & chips for tea on a Monday, sausage, mash and beans on a tuesday and I have supper at Marco Pierre Whites Restaurant on a Thursday.

I walk to the Mosque shop in my slippers if I run out of milk, and then I drive my Mercedes to Spinneys to do my shop.

I wear Designer perfume costing 600 Dhs a bottle to go and buy a copy D&G bag when I visit Karama.

It's all about choice, the day I leave Abu Dhabi, I wont eat at Marco's I wont pay 100 quid a bottle for perfume, so why not do it while I am here and can afford it.

But your bill in any of the top restaurants in the UK will be a lot cheaper because you won't pay as much for the wine!
I get the Mosque shop to deliver the milk darling :D
and you need to watch your saturated fat intake with that diet ;)

But can you really afford the Mercedes and the designer perfume or are you simply living in credit beyond your means? If you lose your job tomorrow, what next?
