By the way, Feline Friends doesn't have a shelter and all fosterers are full. The organisation is run by volunteers and if the cat is safe they won't be able to take it right now. It's a constant problem.
Perhaps knock on neighbours door or leaflet the area? If you have the time you could take it to the local vet and they'll scan the cat and if there is a chip they may be able to find the owner.

Good idea to take it to the vets to see if it has a chip. I'll do that this evening, if we still have him. I say 'him', but it could be a 'her'.
