to be fair it worked well for the Irish only after massive levels of funding from the EU. and the EU is not likely to do that again.

Inse, have you even read the article....... McCrone admitted it back in 1974...

"Britain is now counting so heavily on North Sea oil to redress its balance of payments," he wrote in 1974, "that it is easy to imagine England in dire straits without it." McCrone concluded that oil could reverse the income gap per head between Scotland and England.

"For the first time since the Act of Union was passed, it can now be credibly argued that Scotland's economic advantage lies in its repeal."

And where about are you talking... Wytch Farm??? You're having a laff... that wouldnt keep 2 jags in juice for less the whole country...

often wondered why that turned out the way it did...

I know it was post-Empah, post-Suez and the Americans would never have given their permission anyway, and "East of Suez" etc but it wasn't *that* long after NIOC / Mossadegh in Iran...

Yeah ! Shut down the House of Lords and make it the new devolved English parliament with MEPs (Not European MPs but Members of the English Parliament...like MSPs in Scotland). Leave existing MPs at Westminster for UK reserved matters - but possibly reduce their numbers, seeing all they will be talking about will be national macroeconomics, defence, foreign policy and constitutional matters.

The devolved unicameral governments will be more efficient... they tend to legislate quickly (5-6 months instead of 12-18 months) and get things done.

Though, down the road, it could lead to political dissolution of the UK while maintaining the same crown - like Scotland and England were from 1603 to 1707.

Can't we just ditch the monarchy whilst we're at it?
