There's one other big difference now - the rugby itself is immeasurably better than it has ever been, with all the major nations taking sevens much more seriously as a format these days. This means that genuine rugby afficionados are more likely to go, but perhaps fewer pissheads..........
There's another point - the players themselves think it's great. Most IRB Sevens tournaments are somewhat 'sheltered' in that the only thing on is the main event itself; a number of players have told me that the chance to mingle with real amateur rugby people (i.e. those playing in the Vets, Ladies, Youth, Invitation, etc, competitions) which is something they usually miss, is something they really enjoy at Dubai.
I'll be working again, so it won't make much difference to me. I'll be the tall, officious self-important looking one with a clipboard and a test tube.......

hummm... which bit, the Rugby that no-one is watching, the pissed up British slappers fighting over the unallocated seats, or the posers?
I've been a couple of times - if I get an invite this year I may go, but there are normally better things to be doing...

It's lost a lot of it's magic for me over the last few years. Taking most of the local finals off the main pitch is wrong IMO. I'll be running around in a bright shirt for the first two and a half days then falling over for the last three or four hours once I'm not needed to ref or run touch.
