In answer to the original question, No. I'm sitting in Schipol, enjoying an ice cold beer, excellent service, nobody trying to sell me something I don't want (KLM aside), nobody hawking o spitting or pushing in front of me in the queue...

...and the last time I went through Schipol they had a tiny smoking room. OK, it was a farcial little space but it was still there! After 8 hours one gets a tad stroppy.....

You are not SUPPOSED to like the M.E. It is punishment for doing something truly awful in a previous life. Maybe you were an Englishman and this is you reaping the reward !

Am I right in thinking Saudi Arabia is the worst place for ex-pats out of the usual Middle Eastern suspects?

Most people i know who actually lived in Saudi in a decent compound prefer it to other ME places.
Not all, but most that I know.

I would rather trampoline on 1000 knives than set foot in that barbaric place. Want to go out to dinner and enjoy a glass of wine...............No. Want to go to a beach in a bikini.....................No, want to drive a car......................No, want to have any sort of normal life...........No

Dont do it unless its double what you can earn in another gulf state

The odd thing about Saudi is, that with the right amount of wasta lurking in the background it can be tolerable ( if you are prepared for a mixture of the thirteenth century and 1978....)

Oh dear. But what if it's for less than a year?

I'm feeling pressured purely because of my terrible financial situation. In all other aspects I'm considering it to be a complete waste of 6-9 months of my precious life.

Professionally, the Saudis (and their country) are fine - much better to work with/for than, say, the Emiratis - but the lifestyle takes some getting used to.

Be careful about being seduced by the money though - in most professions I have heard about, the 'Saudi premium' (i.e. getting paid more there than in other Gulf locations) has all but disappeared.

Personally I'd never move to Saudi...but I have taken on a guy from UK (single) who is based in Riyadh and he doesn't hate the place.

He does his work then once a month heads to Bahrain or Dubai for a bit R&R
