Well not just men I think, people in general are attracted to people who make them feel attractive or interesting or feel good about themselves. Whether they realise this or are that self aware is another thing.
Not speaking about general lust issues here but real life interaction.

Spot on. Its very little to do with looks, especially from women. The adage laugh a woman into bed I find to be true. That explains why some people seemingly punch above their weight, looks wise maybe but you can be certain he shows a genuine interest in her and makes her happy.

Its hard work though having to keep my missus laughing and not realising I am an overweight oaf of average intelligence............

Perhaps more a case that many women are interested in personality above looks. Many of us find a man who is interesting, intelligent, humorous and kind far more appealing than some pretty boy or muscle bound lump.

Looks will always fade, but a good brain and personality are far more interesting. Plenty of men are aware of that too. Not saying anyone wants to spend their life with a munter but some things are more important than being beautiful.

Mind you, I have no idea how most of you ever get laid...

not what I was saying at all you have missed the point. I was saying people find attractive people who find them attractive, however I didn't imply that this is a concious choice.
Most people are not that self aware to spot this at the time, it happens in as a random we just clicked way rather than they made a choice of whats available.

i agree with that. it's kind of like people adjust to operating within the same range on attractive-scale. there is no point lusting for someone you will never get. we learn that very early in life. there are exceptions of course, but they are largely due to other factors such as being filthy rich or famous overriding the fact that you are butt-ugly and therefore ranking outside your natural place on the scale.

the above only applies to relationships by the way. when it comes to one-night stands anything is possible. typically you can aim at least two levels above your normal rank and still have a decent chance of success. go lower than your normal rank and it is a guaranteed thing. unfortunately most blokes are lazy and therefore end up with the worst looking women in the club/bar as they couldn't be arsed to make much of an effort..
