Anyone here ever lived in Shanghai?

Re: Anyone here ever lived in Shanghai?
Potentially, yes, but I know that some of staff in dragon mart have other forms of part time work - I was proudly told by a girl in the Trap Bar that 3 days a week she sells garden furniture in dragon mart, so I did the right thing: took her number and bought some garden furniture off her.
The construction workers probably do account for the bulk of them - Samsung tend to use Chinese workers. Although now the Burj is done I wonder where they will be placed next... shit, a Chinese built nuclear power plant. I'll be leaving the gulf the day the fuel rods arrive - 2017 I think.

China has thirteen nuclear power plants operational right now, with seventeen more planned or under construction. I wouldn't trust anything built in the Gulf because the Arab business mentality tends to be price driven rather than quality driven...and they manage to piss so many people off with their arrogance and ignorance half the foreign firms probably deliberately deliver sub-standard stuff hehe.
I'd put money down that the first man on Mars will be Chinese - Obama has decided NASA is better used to make Muslims feel better about themselves:

So you've never, ever been to a dodgy bar in the UAE? Or do you take my approach to Playboy (only for the articles, honest), just nochalantly sipping your beer with some fine shag smouldering away?

In between various tasks and news which indicate that this week's going to be shite (it had gone tits up before midday, thank god its a day shorter than usual), I've been trying to think of some pun or inneundo linking Trap Bar girls and garden furniture. I'm feeling really cold on this one...

The reason you won't see many Chinese socially here is because of said girls in Ally Pally. A normal, half-respectable Chinese woman will go out once or twice here, get accosted by middle aged drunk Brits and sleazy Arabs who feel they can buy them on the basis on their nationality and then never go out again unless with an armed escort Generally they leave after a few years regardless of how good work is because even grocery shopping is an event where you walk around a supermarket trying to avoid being mistaken for something for sale by men.

This sadly is very true. Unfortunately for the many highly educated Chinese women here who work hard in a salaried position or have business they are "tarred with the same brush" as the hookers. And as noted, many people feel any Chinese lady is open to proposition, often quite hostile, and this is very upsetting to them.

Having deviated from the OP's question, I would say after having visited Shanghai a few times, I would much prefer to live there rather than AD. A good start is the "French concession" which is a lovely area, but of course expensive compared to other Chinese locations.

But going back on topic - the rents in Shanghai aren't exactly cheap as chips from what I've seen. They look on a par with what I pay in the Cotswolds. But then, I don't get access to a swimming pool and gymn here. Just the local sheep.... Who are marginally less attractive than a 90 year old Sino working girl...

Any self-respecting Chinese lady venturing into the Ally Pally or anywhere similar is likely to get propositioned, no argument with that--but unless she's a social anthropologist or a masochist (or just very thirsty and new in town) as well as being respectable, she shouldn't be there.
Then there are the half-way houses, such as Hemingways; occasionally there are some hookers in there, but they look like hookers, and I seriously doubt any Chinese lady dressed and behaving respectfully would get propositioned. Although I obviously don't see all that goes on, I've never seen the Chinese waitress in Heminways propositioned.
And then you've got everywhere else--bars with no-hookers policy, supermarkets, shopping malls and so on: are you seriously saying that drunk Brits and sleazy Arabs proposition them there? From obversation I'd say I doubt it very much, but if you have it on good authority rather than surmise then I'll take your word for it.

To be fair in this country any unveiled woman is pretty much a mark already for certain types of men. If she happens to be young and attractive it's even worse...and then if she's Chinese forget it - UN escort needed hehe.
I have a Japanese lady friend who also get's accosted in this way. She hardly ever goes out without escort either...seems being a young east Asian female in the UAE can be a bit of a shite experience for many...simply because a few bars have old Chinese hookers in them. Blimey that must mean all the African women here are on the game too right?
I won't even mention Kazaks!

I've been to many dodgy bars and find them hilarious - I also find them less pretentious than most of the "nice" bars in the UAE (which tend to be filled with cliquey twats, capricious harpies and other assorted "exprats")

I'm struggling with this one, Norm.
Any self-respecting Chinese lady venturing into the Ally Pally or anywhere similar is likely to get propositioned, no argument with that--but unless she's a social anthropologist or a masochist (or just very thirsty and new in town) as well as being respectable, she shouldn't be there.

To be fair a bar is a public place and people should be allowed to have a beer in peace without being mistaken for a hooker even if there are hookers there. Of course there are certain places a nice girl should avoid though...otherwise blokes like me and you will have no privacy hehe.
Then there are the half-way houses, such as Hemingways; occasionally there are some hookers in there, but they look like hookers, and I seriously doubt any Chinese lady dressed and behaving respectfully would get propositioned. You may of course doubt all you like...I am only relaying the experiences of Chinese friends of mine, some of which I witnessed myself. My girlfriend works in the revenue dept of a 5 star hotel was dealing with an Arab man who called to book a room....all went as normal then the man asks "Are you Chinese?". GF says "Yes" innocently thinking he's being friendly after he got his room booking sorted. Man then replies "Ah can you arrange a girl for me, maybe you or one of your friends?"...girl hangs up phone disgusted.
That was this week's story. Last week she was walking in uniform through the lobby to the back office when a local stopped her and asked if she wanted to be his girlfriend and that he had lots of money. She walked off disgusted.
My ex-missus was a Captain in the Philippine Army...I could tell you some wonderful stories about her. I think the only person who tops her for sleazy men here accosting them was my ex gf from Essex...big blonde lass
And then you've got everywhere else--bars with no-hookers policy, supermarkets, shopping malls and so on: are you seriously saying that drunk Brits and sleazy Arabs proposition them there? Seriously though, it can be very bad for them here. One only has to see the immediate correlation between Chinese woman and prostitution by several posters in this thread to know it's probably an issue. I'm sure if we were talking about Ethiopia or Russia people wouldn't rush to type about hookers.
Still, I have two boxes of weisbier at home so it's not all negative here

I'm confused by all of this... is the conclusion, don't buy rattan garden furniture down the trap bar? Should I have bought the wicker from desert dan like my wife wanted?
I just see people - I'll talk to anyone no matter what their profession. In my line of work you have to or you'd never speak to anyone.
