It's sad to see how US conservatives are now dominated by the so called Christian Right (who don't seem very Christian or particularly right). The party that once spearheaded the rights of the working man, of minority groups is now known as the party of an odd strain of evangelical Christianity.

There are Republicans who are not buying into this however - sadly not enough. I hope the party has a shake up after loosing the last election.

I suspect a lot of people convert for these reasons and know of several in my personal circle - simply to marry a woman. When they start telling me their new Muslim names (which are always Arabic names) I wonder if they have changed religion or culture...or both?

Many don't know that leaving is not allowed and their own scriptures and schools of though proscribe imprisonment or the death penalty.

I know of no other religion which applies this rule.

Scientologists can be bastards if you want to leave. Though that's not really a religion just a load of mentalists.

The Jehovah's Witnesses can be sods as well, and will completely ostracise people who leave, whether they're family or not. Still, not quite as bad as threatening death.

I don't think I'll ever understand why an all-powerful God needs so much protection by angry mobs.

They aren't big enough to be anything more than a cult though...and they have no official scripture promoting this.

Not really a comparison to the Islamic treatment of apostates. Only the Mafia has comparable rules when you want to leave.

I'm getting tired of this thread, but just want to point out to one poster that atheists and marxists or socialist are not the same thing.

Atheism is a lack of belief, it's not a specific group, or anything like a religion. An atheist can tell you why they don't believe in any deity and prefer science and logic, yet believers cannot seem to do the same. I'd actually prefer it if one just said that they simply do and it seems/feels right to them rather than trying to prove the impossible.

Not sure about the purpose, I guess some people get a lot out of it. We used to have monthly services there instead of regular assembly which was cool.

I wish religious people would be more honest and simply state they believe this to be true and leave it at that. Faith means to believe without evidence. Why do you care about proving your belief to us kaffirs?

Doesn't this sum it up. We can do this in England, Denmark or the US about Christianity and no one will bat an eyelid.

In Muslim countries we can go to jail...seem like a dreadfully insecure system to me.
