You can get the equivalent to OS for the US by downloading them from National Geographic. My hand held GPS, which I use out in the desert, came with a subscription which included 24 free downloads. Additional maps are $1. They are as detailed as OS maps and I find them very useful. They print on standard size printer paper.

Contrary to what some miserable gits would have us believe Britain is still Great but what is it that makes it great?
For me it is the friendly helpful people, the wonderful countryside, the pubs, the self effacing nature of the Brits, the architecture, the polite drivers, he beautiful villages, the food. Also the fact that Britain really is still very influental on the world scene, still makes the best cars and bikes in the world, has some of the best innovators and engineers in the world. Things arent brilliant at the moment but they arent anywhere in the world to be fair and they are getting noticeably better. So what is it that makes Britain Great for you? CBC here in a Canada is pretty crap in comparison. Hockey Night in Canada is literally the only time I ever watch it. |

We discovered a whole new area yesterday only a few miles from home, a wonderful mix of common and woodland to take the dog. Yes another thing that makes Britain great.

Then it occurred to me: why is it that when positive comments are made about the UK they must either be qualified with the ('but I do realise that there are problems etc'.,) disclaimer, or their author is accused of rose tints etc? Yet: when Australia (the only place I can compare with personal experience), is constantly defended with pride (I have no prob with that), as the 'best country country in the World/ living the dream' etc (I have a prob with that), it's the opposite way around. Anyone who says anything negative about Aus is criticized/ridiculed/ or just plain hammered (as on one site-poor sod)? It's a kind of heads I win, tails you lose scenario'. Mustn't be glowing about the UK. Must be glowing about Australia. And it has been played thus for years on expat sites. I wonder why. (Rhetorical). |

You know, you DO look on the UK with constant positivity (lousy word but it will do).

If I say my life here in the UK is great someone will come along and tell me that it isnt great for everyone (which of course applies to every country in the world) but if someone says my life in Australia is great then it is just accepted with no argument. |
