It seems to me that the original meaning has changed somewhat to take in a large swathe of the under class, working class and general proletariat,over time.
Heard it said that anyone wearing a football shirt,be it England or club is one.
Could be one group in the social order with feelings of superiority over others deemed inferiors.
Perhaps little changes during the course of time and folk continue to need to reaffirm their status by looking down on some one else?

If Chavs could be herded together and taken to remote island somewhere and dropped off, the UK would be a better place for it.

They represent a lot of what is wrong in UK society as a combined result of social welfare gone crazy and the child centred approach to education which began in the 80's and continues on it's crazy path today.

I think there is a difference between the teddy boys, rockers, skinheads, suedeheads etc of the 50's/60's and 70's and the Chavs of today.

Those in the 50's-70's were just rebellious in their own right and were oftening rebelling against the adults in society.

Chavs include whole families of all ages and can sometimes be identified in whole areas of big cities.

They are not so much rebellious as selfish immoral takers who give very little to society but expect everything from society at little cost to themselves.

They care only about their rights and not about their responsibilities.

I saw the whole thing swing into action working in UK schools from the late 70's onwards.

There are several interpretations of what the four letters "CHAV" mean in England and Wales.....here in Scotland the equivalent letters meaning exactly the same thing are "NEDS".....the most common for the former being "Council House Adolescent Vermin" (with all due apologies to the many decent, law abiding people who live in social housing - local authority owned properties - in the UK).

Here in Scotland it can interpreted as "Non Employable Delinquent Scumbags".

Every weekday on British TV both Chavs and Neds can be seen in all their gory glory on ITV-3 TV between 09:25 and 10:30 hrs on one of the direst of programs to ever be permitted to be shown on British TV - hosted by an equally dire bloke you could well have been a guest on his own program bearing in mind his own personal track record in the past......The Jeremy Kyle Show - Jeremy Kyle - a geezer from Reading, Berkshire, England, who now makes a living off the backs of the worst of the over fecund, ineducable Great British Underclass - recruited straight off the direst sink estates of the UK and encouraged to reveal all their sordid, sewer rats type taxpayer social welfare funded lifestyles on public television all for a few moments of publicity on TV and willing to be taken advantage of and to be subjected to the hypocritical sneering and insults and opprobrium of the dreadful smug, self satisfied Jeremy Kyle.

Kyle is off to the USA sometime soon it seems where, according to him, and in his own words, he will put on show "even worse doughnuts than he has back home here". In the normal parlance of his "guests" - or "victims" - "***** **l* can you ******** believe they could get ******* worse than this ******** lot of ******** who can only talk ****" and act ****" and are off their *******heads all the time on ******* crack and I'm ******* sure I'm the ******* daddy and I will ******* buy some nappies for the ******** baby as soon as I get my ******** dole money.
