That seems low to me, but I guess it depends which part of the country you're in. My husband and I pay for our health insurance because we're self-employed. We're in our late 40s and had no pre-existing conditions when we signed up. When we first started our business 8 years ago, we paid about $700 for our coverage (for two). Every year the increase has been between 15% and 25% and now we're at $1,400 - and we only kept it that low because we cut some benefits. Next year I have no doubt we'll be up to $1,600 - the year after, we'll be up to $1,900. And after all that, they won't pay for my migraine pills which they deem unnecessary despite a prescription. Lord knows what they'd do if one of us got an expensive illness.

I mentioned earlier that I could not get insurance after a minor back surgery 3 years ago, apart from that I'm fighting fit in my early 40's. I managed to get on a friends company policy otherwise I wouldn't have got coverage.

The impression I get is as soon as you actually start claiming ( heaven fordbid ! ) they want to get you off thier books asap.

This really scares me. The healthcare reform that just passed prevents insurance companies from dropping anyone for that reason starting in 2014. So of course, the companies will have an incentive to drop anyone with claims prior to that date. My doctor wants me to have an x-ray and I'm scared to do it because I just had a bunch of blood tests and an MRI. I worry that they'll find a way to drop me because I'm starting to cost money. Nuts!

Wow Thats a very scarey position to be in, Im sorry I missed the previous back surgery comment.

They are bean counters and will do what it takes, compassion is not in their vocabulary.

I can see why you want to go back, many of us are one sickness away from Bankruptcy.

Yikes Sally you are damned if you do and maybe if you dont, the powers that be certainly know more about us than we do ourselves.

Whoa....wait a minute! How dare you be so presumptuous and conceited to infer I don't know what I'm talking about?! You know nothing about me! And don't single me out for airing my views or blame me for "stirring the pot" (btw Dunrovin' was talking in jest ...although you chose to jump on that bandwagon and use it to your advantage). I'm not in the minority regarding my feelings on you attempting to dictate what should or should not be discussed in the MBTTUK forum. On the contrary, TT, the majority are in agreement with my sentiments. What right have you to dictate what should be discussed?? Do you have a feeling of righeousness because you started the topic?

Perhaps you don't think "selling houses has taken pages and pages of this topic" because that particular issue is dear to your heart....just as Jackie's medical financial predicament is dear to her heart. Both issues have merit, but has anyone shot you down in flames, or asked you to start a separate topic about the inability to sell your house? I think not!

You gave Jackie short shift because you assumed she had cancelled her healthcare insurance...just as you now assume I don't know what I'm talking about. Wrong on both counts! Perhaps if Jackie had been bemoaning the inability to sell her house you'd have chipped in and added to the discussion and not admonished her and her concerns to a separate thread.

You know, what bothers me too is the waste in the system. Because of intense shoulder pain, my specialist has prescribed drugs, an x-ray and a visit to a physical therapist - all at the same time! Wouldn't it make more sense to have the x-ray, see if that turns up anything and then go for the therapy and/or take the drugs if it's indicated that they will help?

It just seems like there are no limits placed on doctors. And either because they want to help, or because they don't want to be sued, they just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. In turn the insurance company has to cover all that and still make a profit (the idea of profit in health care is repugnant to me, but it is what it is).

I know most Americans would rear up in horror at the thought of not having every test possible at exactly the moment they want it, but I think it's wasteful and a big problem that the new health care law doesn't go far enough to address.
