The UK has seriously deteriorated in some areas, it has probably some of the dirtiest parts of Europe, take a Barging Holiday on the Continent, then do the same in the U.K, the difference in cleanliness is hugely noticeable. I visit the UK routinely, but have the means to stay in the nicer areas and to enjoy those parts that are yet unspoiled. In Canada, we drink to socialise, in the UK far too many drink to get drunk. Oh yes, I did attend several U.S Universities, post Grad, also attended 3 Canadian Universities. |

Since being in Australia I have found other things to be scared of......snakes, kids drowning in the sea(quite common, scarily enough!). Car breaking down in the middle of nowhere, and I guess like you in France( i have been often) you are always in the middle of nowhere if you opt for the rural life. The things that scare you the most probably never happened to you while you were there and will probably never happen if you return. Its just letting your imagination run away with you. I'm scared of people calling me a failure, or that I will miss oz if we move back, but only time will tell, and the bottom line is you can always retire in france when your children have grown up! There are many parts of England that are still very beautiful and fairly low crime rates. Trouble is, all we hear on the news is doom and gloom so thats what we expect. Since coming to oz I have read and seen the film "the secret". I'm sure you have heard of it? Well anyway, I have realised that if I want to be happy here, I will. If I want it to work in the uk it will. If I don't it won't. Simple as that really. We just don't want it here anymore, so it wont work as we dont really have our hearts in it. We are currently planning to return in July, and wed have been here for 11 months. Long enough to fill a years diary, almost!! A fabulous life experience, and a fantastic lesson. xxxxx besides I cant live without Indian takeout on a fri nite!!!! Or dark nights at xmas so you can admire everyones decorations! I love UK and proud to be English. Maybe we should all be more patriotic about our country instead of slagging it off, and use our votes, instead of thinking that it will never make a difference. Good luck in whatever you decide, and be happy that youre only a couple of hours and an easyjet fare away!!!!xxxxxx |

Drink driving is HUGE over here....try going along Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake in the peak of summer - it's full of wild, pissed-up, puking, fighting Canadians. We get to see both countries for their good and bad points...and in the end, we develop a definite sense of knowledge and understanding of what we see and deal with day-to-day. In the newspapers the other day, there are 4 teens up in court for killing a cat in a microwave and last year there were two d*ckhead lads an hours drive from Red Deer who beat, tortured and dragged to it's death behind a truck, his OWN family's black Lab! Not to mention the gang-related gun shootings that go on in Edmonton and Calgary. I too am of the mindset about the kids in the UK....most of them are just harmless, in a group hanging around with nothing to do. SOME of them are little b*stards and get up to no good (I should know, I had my fair share of them before I came to Canada)....but mostly they're just hanging out.

Stupid attacks on local shops, stealing stock, money and smashing premises up. Unbelievable, both really lovely areas. I guess I was naive thinking it would all be so perfect! :( |
