Re: Sum up GREAT BRITAIN...
The first and foremost thing you've got to remember about Britain is that it's cold and wet and dank and everyone spends fifty weeks of the year huddled around the fireside. Look at those PATHETIC crowds for the Premier League & the first round of the Six Nations and tonight's England v Switzerland game at Wembley.
The second important fact is that Britain is covered in concrete and what little remains of the countryside is at least two hours drive so even if you wanted to walk or cycle or swim (there are no beaches of course and the sea is too polluted anyway) you'd spend so much time getting there, you'd only have a half hour of daylight to do it in.
The third important fact is that Britain has barely recovered from WW2 rationing and it's so expensive that nobody can afford to buy new cars/TV/go on holiday abroad anyway.
The fourth important fact is that Britons have no sense of humour and in no circumstances are able to laugh at themselves.
I'm sorry if the truth hurts but it's got to be said.

The best humour in the world comes from GB; I live in Canada, and trust me, the people here take themselves so seriously. They've had a SoH bypass.

I think its ok. yess you can love it or hate it but I'm glad I can talk about Britain as my origin rather than Congo, Bangladesh, Surinam, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Eritrea ..America and so on. Statistically it is more likely to be born and die in shit than coming from the UK - so I'm happy to be blessed with that and yes I like the place.
I don't think I've summed it up though.

These days, technology has transformed the world of teaching the deaf and hard of hearing.
Sorry, way off topic but what the heck.

Actually, it's also a deaf thing. My dad used to teach profoundly deaf children (60's to 80's). Back then, being profoundly deaf from birth usually meant you were unable to develop very complex language skills and also therefore to express complex ideas. His students would write things like they would be going home in three sleeps.

Thank you. I stand corrected by your very polite reply! Life is an education and all that

Re: Sum up GREAT BRITAIN...
I grew up in the UK and went to Hong Kong when I was 21. Been in South Africa for nearly 30 years now (my mother is South African). The last time I was in the UK was about 20 years ago. AFAIK I don't have any close family left there.
I left because I was restless, and really felt life might have something better to offer, and I wanted to see a bit more of the world. Haven't regretted it at all. I've been very happy here but the current problems are undeniable. Probably predictable too.
Many wife moved back to Scotland about 18 months ago for various reasons (mainly her family and concerns about the future). She has some regrets and visits for long periods, and we've no intention of seperating, let alone getting divorced.
I'll probably do a recce in a month or two but I really don't know what to expect. It's just been so long, and I'm not sure I'm looking forward to it, but I'm trying to be open minded about this. We'll see.

well, Ive found plenty of humour on this site!! UK is home, as for countryside, where did you live?? Plenty of open space and beaches if you want to loook!!
Whats the point of all open space in oz if you have to share it with 10 billion flies? Would rather be in uk and huddled round my cave fire than die of toxic poisoning from fly sprays!! And as for having to drive to everywhere.....Ive never been in the car so much in my life!! Or indoors to avoid dust storms and flies!!
oh and as for holidays....where do you go on holiday here then? Australia?!! I know its a beautiful country, but if it was indeed as great as many of us believed we'd want to stay, and Australian Government wouldnt need to launch migration programmes as they would already have large population!! I mean come on 20million in 200 odd years?? Hardly top sales figures!! Don't see America holding "get a new life" shows ever......(not that I'd go there!) to make it out to be the dogs nuts.....
Oh and as for new cars and holidays.....thats a bit materialistic, I'd go back with nothing to be with my family now, as they are priceless, and the best things in life are free. and I do laugh at myself often!! For being a pratt for believing all the shite we've all been fed through tv over the years about oz. Be ok if it wasnt so far!! And laughing at all the guliable folk still at home believing it!!

I also wanted to mock the view that many, but not all, Aussies have of the UK.
Everyone of my statements is so blatantly untrue that I cannot believe anyone would take it seriously!
Unless they've 'gone native' of course - a bit like John J. Dunbar perhaps, although in his case it was entirely positive!

Yeah, and I bet the trolley's don't look like they've been dredged from the local canal eh?!!!
England is, to me, dark and grey, yet sunny and crisp. Windy and rainy, yet hot and dry. Green and lush, yet snowy and frosty. Old and historic, yet modern and cosmopolitan. Every little part of the UK has its own antithesis somewhere. That variation in environment cannot be duplicated to the same extent anywhere else in my opinion.
Oh....and it's home oh, and I'll be there in two sleeps time!!! Erm, have I mentioned that fact before???
