I am renting out my house so if I change my mind I can come back. In my mind I will be giving it a year's trial to see how I feel. Feel's good at this early stage to be going home. I hope it works out but I can come back if it doesn't. Don't want to become a ping ponger though.

yes, we moved back to australia "permanently" after being in london for almost 8 yrs...my dh was born there, but grew up in australia from mid childhood, and bth my kids were born in london.
we got fixated on moving back and i was so sure i would never want to to come back that i didnt even bother t get my citizenship before leaving
when we got back, you have the euphoria etc, but it gradually wears off...and i realised that australia wasnt all i had been giving it credit for all those years...
so we joked as we were returning, "what if we get back and don't like the gold coast..the only other place we'll want to live is sydney" (we've lived both of these places before) so we get back, spend a year on the gold coast, it was fine, but not what we were after , and then down to sydney, which is awesome, but we find ourselves heading back to the uk in march, for an indeterminate period of time, to live a cheaper life and go on an adventure..we don't really know where we belong now...

Charley - no offence meant to your home town :-) - it is possible that spending 3 years in a council house in B.Leys while I did my nurse training may have skewed my impression slightly ;-) Being forced to flee because some neighbours there didn't like me (they had burned down the house of the last people they didn't like, starting with the kids beds) sort of scared the living daylights out of me and left me with a negative impression. Then when we moved and bought a lovely place in a nice new housing development - also in North Leicester but slightly out of town - some of our neighbours weren't much better - their older kids put sticks into the spokes of my kids bikes when they cycled past, and regularly threatened to chop my 6 yr old son into little pieces...and the parents just swore at us when we went to speak to them about it... It was all like something you would read in the Daily Mail!
I guess though, if I had been from Leicester originally I would have known to avoid those areas :-)

Thanks for this ,we are in a very similar situation ,and we are of a similar mind-set :)

Good -luck !

I plan on going home this year but am starting to get a bit worried, my situation here is awful , money wise and sad since i once made good money and squandered it all now I am a waitress...so I am worried I will not have enough to have a place to live when i get there for a few months while i tie down a proper job.. Also I have a lot of friends in the UK that gripe about the gangs and the kids and the crazyness and all want to come to America, it worries me and makes me wonder if I am doing the right thing.. Then I have to remember they only think of the U.S as what they see on t.v I have lived here for 20 years and everywhere has its issues.. i dont know just woke up a bit worried for the future today i think new years does that to you...

Hayley

We all have our ups and downs mentally worrying etc, that's normal.

Don't take much notice of your friends as regards living in America, you know what its really like, unless they have lived in America they haven't a clue what its like here, I don't think you can compare the two, look at all the guns and gang shootings.

There are good and places to live in both countries, you just have to avoid the bad places, your friends will tell where they are.

Look at your family over there, how are they all doing? None of mine are rich but they are all working and all seem to be doing just fine........just as you (and I) will, it might be a bit of a push at the beginning but we will get there.

I have been having terrible cold feet this past week and I am leaving 8 weeks from tomorrow!!

Hi Chocciecake (great name BTW :D)

It's not very often you see Australians in this part of the forum. I just wondered what it is about Australia that is not doing it for you? I have seen somewhere that your husband is getting paid in sterling so that is obviously working against you at the moment with the exchange rate, anything else other than the cost of living? How do your families feel about you both heading back to the old dart?

Of course your friends think the U.S is great...everywhere is great when you are on holiday for 2 weeks!
Once you actually live, work and shop in a new Country, you find out how things REALLY are.
I love holidaying in Italy and everytime I return I say I want to live there, but in reality I probably couldn't live there because it is so different to how we live in England. I can't speak enough Italian to work so I would be very lonely.
Yes, Britain has problems, but so does the U.S, Canada and anywhere else. Go for it!

It's really, really difficult to comprehend what the U.S. is like when all you have known is the UK. I have been here over 30 years and reality only began to sink in 20 years ago. The UK is a totally different animal from the USA. When I grew up and lived in the UK, I thought all countries operated more or less the same way, except for the third world countries. I could not have been more wrong, but it took experiencing it - and the shock - to finally realize it.

I'll second that, just go to the centre of town and look at their faces, some look like they have the worlds problems on their shoulders.

While we worry about healthcare they worry about where they are going on their 4 weeks holidays, Huhhh if only...

On the other hand Americans are so positive and seem to have less in my opinion.

I also have a couple of UK freinds here that like to go back on their hols but say they would never live there but they are the ones that are loaded with cash and driving porsches so if i was that well off maybe i would feel different too.. but once those things are gone you miss the people, the culture and the tradition.. everything seems so false here...

Good luck to those landing soon, I land Jan 31. I am still having the wobbles every so often. We have been back in Canada for 4 years, i knew after year 1 it was a mistake. But I stuck it out "just to make sure". I guess i was sure lol.

It's a scary thing to do, I think i have a better perspective this time and I am armed and ready!

I will be in Doncaster .....so any of you are returning close to there we can have a coffee (or tea) and share a little support if needed :-)

I think there is , that's when I started to question what am I doing here . For me it was the realization that " O.K if I stay here this is my life : See my family for a week or two each year at best, all the while my parents grow older, my nephews grow up and I'm barely in their lives anymore, I'm surrounded by fake, shallow, materialistic people, I'm paying an arm and a leg in taxes, insurance etc, etc and eventually I'll grow old wither and die with no one around that gives a sh**t " .

Sorry if that's too maudlin but it's the truth - it's really made me think. Like a lot of people say "Stuff" is just stuff, family & friends are what count for everything in life.

Isn't it YOU though that is fake, shallow and materialistic. You were the one that came to the US, probably to enjoy a big house, big car, and a certain lifestyle. You left your family for all those shallow reasons. Now you realise that you miss them, and don't want to stand up and say how shallow you are. Americans aren't leaving in droves to go to the UK, Aussie, NZ and Canada searching for a "better lifestyle."

You dont know the first thing about me so keep you small minded opinions about me to yourself.
I live in a small rented apartment, I drive a small cheap car and I originally moved here to pursue a sporting career not a "better lifestyle" as I knew it would be no better than were I came from.

Americans are brainwashed into believing this is the best country in the world, and although it has some wonderful points, it is far from the best.

Yup, and I thought this forum was made up of a supportive group of people, helping each other to deal with the troubles & decisions they face day to day.

I suppose you always get a minority of pathetic, spiteful people wherever you go - even here.

Americans aren't leaving in droves to go to the UK, Aussie, NZ and Canada searching for a "better lifestyle."

Most Americans have no idea that there is such a thing as a better lifestyle because they never go anywhere. They also think America is 'the greatest country in the world,' as if there is some sliding scale of objective greatness, which is laughable.

I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that we are all in America for 'a better lifestyle' but I came because my company transferred me here. Being one of the people who has experienced other countries, I would now like to leave thank you very much.

Isn't this supposed to be the section of the forum where people can discuss going home? Why attack someone for their feelings just because you don't share them?
