Re: OVER 50's+ MOVING BACK TO THE UK - Part II
I responded to your post, because you said something that I didn't agree with, as soon as you'd said your Obama piece you wanted to move the subject, isnt that typical of you, you want your say but want the rest of us to keep our mouths shut or push us aside if our opinion differs from yours.
Maybe you should have moved the subject over to Chit Chat before you responded.
Its the same old story with you Trotty, you say things on this thread but then suggest they be moved to another thread or create a new thread as you did when some of us wanted to compare and discuss US and UK Healthcare systems.
If you don't want us to respond you shouldn't say such divisive things.
I'm willing to leave it at that, the ball is in your court, do as you wish.

Ain't that the truth. Reminds me of the old saying that a woman has to work twice as hard as a man to achieve the same success - it seems like a black President has to be ten times as good as a white one to get even the most basic respect from half this country. Very depressing to see.

Fish & Chips... my answer is over in Chit Chat....As for the rest regarding me and this forum perhaps you should go back and read who posts divisive statements.
We have been down this road as I said before and I am not about to do it again. This forum is not about who we vote for or what our politics are its about getting through bad days and getting encouragement from those who have already returned home.

Yes - we Brits tend to regard people who are half white and half black as mixed race.
However, you are in the USA so surely you must have heard of the 'one drop' theory; where if anyone has 'one drop' of black blood, then one is regarded as being black, regardless of whether or not they look more caucasian (white) than black).
I have no idea why, perhaps it goes back to the days of slavery?
I know that famous 'mixed race' celebrities class themselves as black in the USA eg. Mariah Carey, Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz.
However, I've seen *some* newspaper articles in the British newspapers and it seems that some of those are regarding mixed-race celebrities as being 'black' eg. the Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamiliton.
(Anyway....none of this has anything really to do with moving back to the UK....)
However, this was in the DM today:

I love the Rightmove website. When you take a look at a house you can also do a street view. This gives an exellent idea of what the area looks like and how narrow the streets are or if they are hilly. I love some area but then when I see the steep hills I have to think a few years on so I think I will cross those off my list.
Shopping carts....Thankyou for the links. I think I will end up with one of those. I do remember buying my Mother one. She was most upset with me. She said those are only for old ladies. At the time she was in her 80's.

He's not black. He is mixed race.
The President was celebrated by many as the first black President, and equally he is hated by many for the same thing. But perhaps we could talk to the people with the racist banners and explain to them that he's only half black. I'm sure they'll tone it right down after that
I also love Rightmove. Spend way too much time on that site! I notice that Streetview in the UK is much more comprehensive than here - presumably because this is such a huge country. Only the most rural properties in the UK are not visible on there.

Mixed marriage has had a hard time being accepted by many people--interestingly, it seems to have been accepted earlier in Britain than in the US--hence the high number of mixed race people in UK now, as the Telegraph article says. Some people still have problems with it, and I think the best way to further the acceptance of mixed marriage is to be clear about it when someone, like Obama, is the product of one...I feel that it would be helpful if people like him would proudly say, "I am mixed race, my mother was white, my father black, and I'm proud of both parts of my heritage."
This could all be said to relate tangentially to Moving Back to the Uk, which after all is now a much more mixed and multicultural society than it used to be!

Re: OVER 50's+ MOVING BACK TO THE UK - Part II
My first post for a while, and from my new and as yet, little explored iPad. It is a temporary replacement for my 24 inch iMac until I am resettled and can buy a 27 inch model.
My house is sold, and I move out next week. I have a tentative flight booked for 2nd November, though am not sure if I can make it. Some health problems cropped up to slow me down, and I see an eye specialist on the day of the house handover.
I suppose England will feel very cold, my winter clothing would be a bit of a laugh to those living in the UK. Ah well, from the fire into the fridge.

So sorry to hear of your sudden change in health but I hope you will be better soon and will not have to delay your flight much if any, and congratulations on the sale of your house

Yes congrats aries, nice to see you posting again, yes winter can be cold here at times, especially from people like you from Oz and me from sweltering Las Vegas, I landed on British soil on December 1st 2010 right in the middle of the coldest and snowiest winter for 100 years, me and Mum were snowed in for 6 days before we could even get out the door of the house so thats over with now so lets hope that this winter will be just as normal as it can be for your landing,

You was the one who brought up voting, not me.
You've said many times over the years that politics shouldnt be on this thread, so you of all people should know better, but still you continue to make negative comments or lie about our president, surely you dont expect us to sit here and let you get away with it, you call our president a great divider and here you are dividing this thread, what more can I say.

Hello Rodney, Im doing fine, getting by, thanks.
Everything you wrote made perfect sense to me, unfortunately the wealthy 1% control this country, they have bought off congress and control the supreme court.
A year ago the republicans ran mid term elections promising they would put Americans back to work, Jobs was their number one election issue, but they haven't done a dam thing, infact Obama presented a Jobs bill but the republicans have said they wont pass it, Id love to see them without a job, a pension, a medical plan, many are purely worthless and have no clue how many Americans live, I've never seen so many people begging, I now see it everyday.
Obama has done a lot more than people give him credit for, democrats always do a bad job of promoting themselves.
This country has taken a nose dive and people are starting to wake up and band together for the common good, the banks have had it too easy and are constantly ripping us off, we the tax payers bailed them out but now they are hanging on to the money and not willing to make loans, instead they are making money off bogus fees that they invent, lets not forget that some of these banks and Credit card companies conduct business in the UK, so look out.
A year ago the Democrats came up with a banking reform bill to protect consumers (Dodd/Franks) but again republicans are holding up the approval process, hoping to eliminate the bill as they run out of time, they protect the banks.
At least MPs in the UK seem to be honest and represent the people that elected them, here the politicians bow to the masters and money that put them in office.
The media are a major part of the problem, they make money from discussing what goes on, plus they make a fortune on advertising fees when election time comes around, one hand greases the palm of the other, what a waste of money...
The only politician I really trust is Bernie Sanders of Vermont, he informs us of what really goes on and the state of this country.
There is so much more I could say but I will leave it at that.
I'm happy to see you are enjoying the U.K, good for you...

Unfortunately no president has the freedom to put into play a lot of the programs that would benefit the country because there is so much corruption behind the scenes. As you say the money rules (corporations, arms companies like Halliburton, media, politicking and even manipulations from other nations such as Israel). Lots of documentation on any one of these factors.
Obama turned grey within a year or so of taking office. I am sure he found out about how power is wielded in the US.

Divisive is a highly subjective judgment call.
On a public forum such as this there is fortunately the freedom to post one's own opinion which some will agree with and some disagree with. It can only be considered divisive if everyone is expected to agree, or if one person feels they can control what is said.
