The US system does need re-doing its such a vast country I sometimes think it would be each State doing is own thing. My husband retired this year and as most of you know he was taken ill. I know hardly anything about the healthcare system but I know we have Medicare part A and B and with our health coverage. We have just signed up for next year and will be paying $100 per month for both of us and that covers health and drugs. The failing in the healthcare here is the drugs once you reach a certain point your healthcare provider makes you pay for your own. Thats once you have reached a certain level.
I think when all politicians from all parties reach Washington DC they have a brain transplant and become totally unreconizable Oooops I said I wouldnt talk about politics sorry................

Rodney..I find British and American comedians stoop to the lowest level to make people laugh. I am still trying to find one that can do his routine without the toilet humour or swearing like a trouper. I stopped watching two and half men as I found it really nasty humour.

I agree with you about politics always a dangerous subject like myself and others have said best to stay away from it. We are a happy bunch warriors dont want to spoil it. Well not always happy

Beedubya....That was a good link I have put it in my file and next time I put an update on the forum I will add it.

Celticspirit...Ireland has changed for the better but only the Irish people really know whats going on. You and I are almost the same age so its not too late for you to move you said you went back in 1995 what made you come back. My Grandmother was Irish Farrell but then my Grandfather was Welsh my Dad was Scottish and my Mother was English so my gene's could have an all out war with themselves
Well in 1985 and during my first marriage we wanted for our children (15 and10) to finish their educations in the UK so they would want to stay there. Both hated the Irish Catholic schools.....Christian Brothers and nuns.....physical punishments....etc., My husband was ok with the NH system as an anesthesiologist. Our marriage was on the rocks before the trip and so when we returned....it did not survive.

Single and ten years later with my son in med school and my daughter at UT undergrad.......I was lonely......sold my little cottage in Highland Park ( the creme de la creme in Dallas real estate) and with a 40' container came back to Belfast. As maybe some of you know.....I have been a dog breeder and AKC judge for many years.....so I had to send three adults and two pups ahead of me to go into Quarantine for six months. Nowadays, one may do the shots and paperwork six months ahead of time in the USA tobavoid quarantine. The night after I shipped the dogs, British Airways......I had a midnight phone call to let me know that the air conditioned hold that carried live animals had over heated and the flight had turned around and landed in Montreal to off load my
dogs. They hosed them down on the Tarmac and then held them with a vet report for 24 hours before sending them to Belfast.
Short story.........I missed my kids so much I returned to Dallas three months later.
I remarried in 1997 to my divorce lawyer's brother. Still, we have very different ideas how and where we would love to spend the rest of our lives.
Neither of my children is married and both live in Manhattan. My husband's family lives here in Dallas and also his two grandchildren. I feel that they are not sob crazy about me.
We are ok with our different goals.....where and when to make a life change. So sorry if you are all bored with my life story......anyway thank you allowing me to belong to this list.
Rodney......I hope you will not leave Shen you return ton the UK. I would so love to meet you one day.......you are one of the most encouraging and positive people ever. In hope your dreams come true back in the UK.
Jackie......you are almost in my mind. You are so brave and in wish the best and healthiest life possible for you.

Take care all of you.........

Beeduya...I liked Peter Kay I only watched the one from Manchester but I could relate to the phone and looking for pens. I think the lady in the audience had way too much to drink.

Rodney....Tommy Cooper one of my favourites and my Dads. I laugh just watching him do nothing.

You are correct..All of George's family including his grandkids live here. Sometimes he calls them "his" grandkids instead of including me.....so I feel so out of the family. They are VERY Greek although they were all born here with a Greek immigrant father and a Lousiania mother. I was born, grew up in Belfast, degreed from Queens uni Belfast and married there but yet they seem much more radical than I am.
Yes you are right......I see my kids in NYC when I go to the Westminster Dog Show February each year. Amanda comes home most Xmases.....mark is a psychiatrist and is usually on call during holidays (suicide prevention) son you are right.....I would most likely see my own kids as often as now.
Soooooo...where to go from here....
Confused in Dallas.

Celticspirit....I dont know how old you are but think about your future and what would be best for you. I think inside you might know whats right its just making the break. I wonder what reaction you would get from your Oh if you put it to him that you want to return to the UK. I always think thats a good indicator of someones feelings.

If you have a great job, things may be different for you - until the job is gone, then you are on the scrap heap with the rest of us. Because in the USA, medical insurance is tied to your job: lose one, lose both. It is a very precarious way to live, and causes many bankruptcies. Perhaps you could educate yourself about the problems with living in the USA, and we in turn can educate ourselves about living in France - though this forum is for people wanting to live in the UK, not France.
Well said Rosie.
Can I add that 62% of all American bankruptcies are Medical bankruptcies and 78% of those people have medical coverage, most have jobs and are homeowners, these people are not losers but just unfortunate to get sick in America, the medical insurance has many holes and related payments that force sick people to lose it all, most people in Europe have no idea how our system works, not even a clue, by the way, Full Coverage is available to the fortune few, most people cannot afford the premiums, I consider that to be a Fact.

Well thats it Im very confused, I have just watched six of Peter Kay little 10 minute clips, not one of them raised a single chuckle from me, the only one I liked was when he did a show live from Manchester, the start of it where he did his entrance singing that country & western song with the two guys walking behind him, I thought that was very good I liked that, but when he did his stand up act on stage I thought it was very boring, none of it was funny to me, but when the camera went to the audience and I saw everyone in histerics, even crying with laughter ---- then I said to myself hang on what is wrong with me, I used to be able to laugh like them, so its got to be funny right? cause all these hundreds of people are laughing uncontrollably,
but not me, and then I thought that all my friends on this thread think he,s funny too, and Im British just like them, I grew up with the dry british humor and I used to be able to laugh uncontrollably at all british stand up, and comedy shows, but not anymore,
But then I thought that well maybe its not me, so then I thought that maybe its just the different style of comedy that has gradually changed through the years in UK over the last say three decades,
So then I searched utube for artists that used to make me laugh so much like hancocks half hour, Ken Dodd, and Tommy Cooper, thats as far as I had the time to look, but I watched a couple of clips from each of those wonderful comedians and guess what ---- from start to finnish of each clip I couldn't stop laughing, I was laughing just like those people watching that new guy Peter Kay,
Its like I have been frozen in a time capsul for over 30 years and just got thawed out like that Mel Gibson movie (forever Young) and I look around and say hay world here I am again --- but WOW you have sure changed a lot, Im the same, I havent changed at all, after all Ive been stuck in a time capsul for 30 years
You see most people on this thread seem to have kept up with the sweeping change of new generations of shows & comedy in the UK over all the years they have lived in there adopted countries, but I havent done that at all,
so all these names of shows and comedians that people mention like Peter Kay and all the others I have never heard of,
You get my point right, you know the gist of what I am saying, so its me that needs to change right, cause for sure we aint gonna ever be able to bring back the kind of comedy that was so funny to me and everyone else way back then from 30 or 40 years ago,
Take care everyone,
Rodney.
That's what I was trying to tell you pal, Everything changes, fond memories remain the same or get better, 30years is a long time, Look how comedy has changed here in America.

If you've got BBC America give Graham Norton a try, I don't always know his guests but the show is always good, at least for me, Norton is Terrific, sometimes he has the good old favorites on there, like Ronnie Corbet, Unfortunately a lot of our old favorites have passed away.

Graham Norton is on Saturday nights, he's Irish, many of the best comedians are.

Peter Kaye, I know what you mean, at first I didnt relate but over time Ive caught on and like him, Garlic Bread got a few mentions, thats one of his famous lines.

Comedy is a funny thing, if its stand up a lot is related to things going on in the country, so you need to be aware of these things in order to relate, when I go back to the UK I may understand some jokes but not others, all it depends how savy Ive been with the news, people look at me and wonder what Im not laughing... Hahhaaaaa... It will take time pal, thats all, it will come back to you.

That's it Rosie, and its a very handy service for some people, I know some places in America have this service but its not available in our area.

Believe me when I say I'm not bashing America, as people have always been very nice to me here, but even today some Americans seem to talk to me as if I came from a third world Country, its almost like they look down and feel sorry for the British, looking on me as one of the lucky ones that got out from all that misery, England is in front of this country in some ways, They are early adopters of technology, they don't worry about religion and politics like this country, and they don't have a ticker on the bottom of the TV screen so they can get depressed about their stocks and bonds, they have more to think about, like picking where they will go on their four weeks holidays hahahaaaa.

I just wish Americans would get educated about the world past our borders and stop believing all the crap they see on TV, they'd soon realize that we are becoming the third world country.

Wow, Bored, you've got to be joking, I was only too happy to hear your life story, I'm sure I wasn't the only one with tears.

Life is tough, sometimes we get put in weird positions and have some very difficult decisions to make, I really feel for you as I can see you are stuck, I think trotty made a few good points, like telling your Hubby you want to move back just to see his reaction, I cant see him wanting to leave his family behind but then again I don't know him.

You really need to know if he would go, but you also need to be 99% sure you will feel happy once you are home and in a daily routine, I know its exciting to make plans and to move back, but once the dust has settled how will you feel, will you have lost the love of your life, is that too much to pay??? so many unknowns at this point, I'm sure all this stuff has gone thru your mind thousands if not millions of times, you see I'm one of those that thinks of back home all day long, its like a lifelong dream.

You had many sad details but the saddest for me was the feeling that the husbands family are not crazy about you.

I wish you well...
