In my experience, I have found it quite easy to meet people and make friends, but I think that is because I have moved to a village. The two local pubs have been good spots to meet people. Also, as has been mentioned, joining a group that interests you is a great way to meet others.

Don't get me started on the coffee nonsense. My local bookstore had a great little cafe which gave way to Starbucks. I was none too happy and refused to use their coffee terms and IMHO their coffee is lousy so I went elsewhere.
