Oh thanks Quoll, that means a lot.
I read your posts with interest and you are always so wise. Will bear in mind what you've said when faced with the opposition!

Absolutely! My friends teenage kids seem to be forever going on field trips to France, or a month's exchange visit to Germany, or an Easter break in Rome, etc etc.

You don't get that in Oz - or the US for that matter.

I honestly wouldn't worry at all. The "obnoxious little runts in hoodies" who I've encountered have all held doors open for me and smiled nicely. Don't know if it's just because I smile sweetly at them but they are all pleasant enough to me. I know from TV and newspapers that there are some nasty little beggars around but the majority are just normal kids out with their mates. They are absolutely no different to how we were at that age.

We're heading off to Aus sometime in next 2 years and at times I do wonder what we're giving up and the risks involved, but have an itch that I must scratch.
Please give us some pointers to potential pitfalls

I am married to an Australian girl and have been in Australia for over eight years , i also have two young children , the main reason I would like to return to the UK is the lack of respect by the Australian media towards people from the UK, often refered to as a whinging pom for no good reason at all, they also are learning to hate the Brits over Anzac Day and cricket ....they go on and on and on about both subjects. If you are not proud of your nationality then yes Australia would be good place to be , but beware of the big mouth ignorant Aussies who carp on and on because the media here encourage them to do so.

In personal experience, Aussies are very proud of their country and yes the media can be very anti anywhere, but is same story everywhere, UK media harps on about immigrants and paints them all the same. As of good Irish immigrant blood don't really fit in with their portrayal....But do love living in England and hope to be just as happy in Aus

To be honest, I don't quite think it is the same. Everything seems to be 'proudly Australian' - you see it all the time, everywhere. On utes, businesses, the TV, packets of food - there's not a day goes by without you see it. It's just not the 'same story everywhere' - you certainly don't have 'Proudly British' or 'Proudly British owned' slapped on everything in the UK.

I insulted everyone on my first day at work by saying I'd been sent to check on the colonys by the Queen

My OH is a strong character and stopped him in his tracks while I on the other hand can see things I will miss here and just don't want to hear any conflicting views,I just want to be left to get on with it as it's hard enough already. I know I want to go home and I know when we get there that I will fell like my old self again and hopefully regain my confidence so wish these people would just be helpful and butt out.
The decision for me to move back is much more about missing out on a life with family and friends. My husband sees Perth as very limiting, geographically and socially. The kids love it but don't all little kids love their life whether they are splashing in puddles, sledging, making sandcastles, kicking up leaves or if we're honest watching the TV for hours on end because it's too hot or cold!!!
We left with a baby and toddler as I've said and they are so much easier now so life will be very different to two years ago.
OOOH I'm in a right mood now!
Yes I agree with you, we hve been told by "friends" here that we were mad to even miss home (We have only told one friend and she thinks it's great, she would leave in a second but family keeps her here) as you said I would not dream of telling people the things that have been said to us (heaven know what it would be like if they knew we are selling our home and then off we go!!)..I will miss some things (only a few) about Perth but not enough to keep me here....my young nephew and nieces have all excellent lifestyles at home, they go dance classes, cricket, football, swimming...and now starting horse riding and we are from a "normal" working class background so I agree with Quoll (again) Aus has nothing more to offer (I think less in lots of ways) than the U.K.....so go with you YOU think, I have come to think why some people do tell you your mad and sometimes I think that they either don't like to be left here...or they would go at a drop of a hat if they could.....good luck and do what is right for you and your family...true friends will wish you well.........

and the fact that if you buy Aus it is usually far more expensive and at times not the best of quality....freedom of choice....but on t.v, radio's it's advertising to the point of brainwashing...now don't get me wrong if it was good quality and the same price as "foreign" brands well I would buy "Home" made everytime.....but alas that's not the way of the world....oh as for Ute's!! does anyone ever see them as "working" utility cars?..the only ones I have seen are with flashy wheels and driven by all ages...and they are usually first of the block at "Traffic Lights"......

What did Rhodes say?..."To be an Englishman is liking winning the lottery of life"....I have never felt more proud to be English/British than ever before...I think that is because having living away from your own country you do really appreciate everything you had.....I would not have put me "up there" as being like that before I left the U.K but all in all I think we are a great bunch in the main....not narrowed minded....friendly.....great sportsmanship and on the whole we have good manners....something that is lacking here in Aus.....I cringe when I hear the words "Paki"..."Wog"..."Choogie"..."Blackie" and that said in a normal conversation.......
