Even if I had money to burn, I don't think I'd spend £845,000 on a 2 bed flat! Especially one that's had all the character stripped from it.

Every time I go to check houses in Kendal, this one comes up

Perfect! Lovely home, detached, tasteful decor, beautiful gardens, on a very quiet road, and right on a river. If anyone has about £400-£500,000 lying around that they don't need, shoot me a PM would you?

Now you're talking! I could live in that house (if it was in the south of England) Wow it's lovely.

(Great name) Undoubtedly more for the money. This particular property is sandwiched between a busy road and the railway lines but I shall take a look.

It's all Mallory's fault ... I really like what I have seen of the Totnes area. Shall keep looking into that for the moment, then take a look in these other areas.
I thought you sounded like a Totnes type of person.

And I have yet to find a shower that can deliver a constant stream of hot water.
Via the internet, I've been looking at hundreds of flats in the UK, and am surprised that so many have showers over the bath, even in retirement complexes, potentially hazardous for older people. I shall certainly have to check in person how the hot water performs. During my 3 months in Germany in 2009, my flat there had an appalling hot water supply, and other residents higher in the building would simply turn on the tap, and walk away for 15 or more minutes.

That's lovely, don't forget to prepare the guest room for all your BE visitors.

This is very true Aries, when I managed that retirement place in Frome quite a few of the residents had their baths converted. I think the idea is that the retirement complexes are for people over 60 (or over 55 in some cases) who are able to live independent lives, I suppose they are looking at the youngster's coming in before they need modifications...........

Thanks again.
There's a little Firefox app called Property Bee, which lists all the activity on a house to date. It can be VERY interesting. However, if a house is taken off the market and then comes back one, it doesn't usually pick that up.

I think Totnes would be a great choice. Lovely town, and in a way a lot like Saltspring in "feel." If I were there, I'd want to live close in, though, not in the nearby countryside. The area down by the river is very pretty, but I suspect if there are houses near there they'll be very expensive.

If we hadn't been dead set on being by the sea, we might have looked seriously at Totnes.

I like the look of this type of Grade 2 listed done-up town bolt-hole (3 bed 2 bath) on a cul-de-sac, but would prefer it a bit cheaper, though it's already priced at that magic 249,500 pounds.

I don't need a garden, got one already.

Like the Totnes links to Exeter/Plymouth/Torquay each about half and hour on the train.

There are flooding issues in some riverside parts of Totnes.

You would need more than the quoted amount to buy and run this place. Check the Energy Performance Certificate on this property, it is quite bad. This is important in the UK given the cost of energy, especially in a Cumbrian climate. Every silver lining has a cloud.

The you haven't tried a shower that is attached to the mains (not an electric rubbish thing) and you'd need to have a good combi boiler for hot water and central heating. Thats what Mum has and we can shower one after the other then run the washing machine and still have hot water to spare. It heats as it runs.

I have a shower fed from a combi boiler. It is the pressure balancing spool valves they insist on fitting that are the problem. Only a matter of time.....

Then a plumbing class at the local tech and removing valves could do it

If you qualify as a plumber then I would definately stay in the US. Who could resist that money? Do you like the decorations and furnishings in the UK homes? It is obvious that a large percentage of the population is colour blind.

I can't do with all those red and black walls and big flowers it look like the 70's all over again. I'm more neutral colours myself, Dh is the home plumber and tackles most projects for us. It's a whole new world of plumbing in UK for him though he may need a course at the tech.
Theres lots of unemployed plumbers around here, used to doing new builds that have dried up.
