The US is also facing a debt crisis and doesn't give much support to individuals in need. It spends too much on defence, but along with many other countries, faces a problem paying pensions when people are living longer and the working population can't keep pace.
Part of me does feel that people like the relative I mentioned get too good a deal, but on balance I greatly prefer the UK system.

reduce all spending by 10% every year till it reaches 30% at the end of 3 years
start with a 50% reduction in defence
Scotland gone
Foreign aid down to 10% of what it is now
NHS starts user co pay fees
JSA automatically stops after 120 days & JSA recipients will not be allowed to collect welfare after JSA ends. Cannot go back on JSA till they have 1000 hours paid work equal to 26 weeks of NIC
EU migrants no benefits till they have six months worth of NIC
Genuine sick & disabled as well as OAP no cuts
Increase corprate taxes

reduce all spending by 10% every year till it reaches 30% at the end of 3 years
