The US is also facing a debt crisis and doesn't give much support to individuals in need. It spends too much on defence, but along with many other countries, faces a problem paying pensions when people are living longer and the working population can't keep pace.

Part of me does feel that people like the relative I mentioned get too good a deal, but on balance I greatly prefer the UK system.

My point was 5.5 billion goes unclaimed by pensioners
5.5 Billion is what is added to the UK's debt roughly every 10 days.

So would I. That doesn't mean that the UK can currently afford that system... because it obviously can't.

It's hard to make big inroads on it, but corporations paying little or no tax is an area which should be addressed.

let me give it a try. Whichever government party is in power.

reduce all spending by 10% every year till it reaches 30% at the end of 3 years

start with a 50% reduction in defence

Scotland gone

Foreign aid down to 10% of what it is now

NHS starts user co pay fees

JSA automatically stops after 120 days & JSA recipients will not be allowed to collect welfare after JSA ends. Cannot go back on JSA till they have 1000 hours paid work equal to 26 weeks of NIC

EU migrants no benefits till they have six months worth of NIC

Genuine sick & disabled as well as OAP no cuts

Increase corprate taxes
