Having read this discussion after recently making the decision to emigrate to Canada, I am thoroughly examining my motives for moving !!

Everybody has their own opinions on life in the UK both good and bad but these must be influenced by motives. I know mine are.

Personally I don't feel the UK is so awful that I must leave - I want to experience life in a different country, and while this has been something that I have previously thought I would do some day, I feel that the government is indirectly helping me make the move sooner rather than later. When I say 'help' I don't mean they are assisting me in my endeavour, I mean the frustration they are causing gives you the kick up the backside needed to make the move. For example:

There are no laws in the UK that mean employers must employ a UK citizen over a foreigner. There have been a couple of instances that have come up in the last 2 weeks where (not in the Daily Mail) companies have ignored applications from local people in favour of immigrants from European countries. In one newly opened shop the whole workforce they recruited were immigrants. I am not against immigration but, in my opinion just as is the case in Australia, Canada and USA this should not be at the expense of UK citizens.

It's certainly all food for thought.

Good luck to everyone leaving AND returning from the UK - I hope it is all you want it to be!

Hello Rubie...
Just to take the above point...........I don't think there's any employment law here in Canada which states a Canadian has preference over an immigrant, but that has certainly been our experience. Mr Oldbag was interviewed for a job for which he was eminently suitable; he satisfied all the listed criteria, and more. The job in question was for an auto-electrician, (he's had over 30 years experience), and we know the guy who was employed had no knowledge at all in that field. The vacancy quite clearly stated that someone with several years experience was needed. Was he employed by the company? No, the job was given to a long-time Canadian resident of this very small town who had worked in a local gift shop.
We have actually been told we will never get work locally because we "speak funny" (with an English accent), and it is the policy of local employers to only employ nationals. This in a so-called "friendly" town. As I said in an earlier post on this thread, I have previously mentioned how unfriendly this place is, and I'm not going to go into it all again.....my posts are there for those interested, but I'll be so glad to get back home.......this time for good!

Good luck as and when, and if, you do come here :)

I would pick up on this point too Rubie. When you have read the Canadian forum for a long time, you will see that many new British immigrants into Canada have issues obtaining jobs - and you might wish that they did have laws that 'made' them employ the immigrant here ! ;) Experience and suitability can often be completely overlooked, because the employer simply does not understand your own work experience.

From your post and things listed by you - I would again examine your reasons for leaving - not being funny - but you may wish to do more homework on Canada. However, as you point out - it is an adventure and a great life experience - but just not to be embarked upon lightly. Best wishes

Hi Annm and Oldbag,

Thanks for your replies.

I do not think Canada ( or any other country) is the answer to all my prayers, from what I've read there's good and bad everywhere in all respects. Neither do I hate the UK - I'm just tired of a governement that does little if nothing to support it's hard working citizens. There is nothing left anymore (as far as I can see) to instill any national pride or decent work ethic - it's no wonder there are gangs of kids causing havoc out there, they have nothing to look forward to so what have they got to lose.

To pick up on the point of employing immigrants - British people are competing with immigrants in their own country for jobs. The way I see it, if British people find it hard to get work in Canada (which I know they do from reading this forum) there can't be much difference can there? British people have it tough abroad and at home, maybe to different degrees but it is still there.

If the UK is as good as many returners believe, remember or want it to be,then I want to see it from that prospective too - I don't see it from where I'm sitting at the moment and can't see things changing.

This is just my opinion, however I know that many who I work with and most of my family feel the same and feel helpless when it comes to the prospect of changing anything. I get a sense that this is something that has increased over the last 2 or 3 years and now with all the added financial pressures that have hit just within the last 6 months I feel it's time for a change.

I'm looking forward to the adventure, something different!! At least if I end up returning it's an experience that I wouldn't have otherwise had.

Good luck to all.

I used to think, naively, that governments were there to see fair play, and to help the citizens (by that I mean inhabitants, whatever there ethnic origin). I also used to think that each government minister knew what the hell he/she/it was talking about with regard to his/her/its ministry or department. Ha! Nothing could be further from the truth....in most countries you can think of. The Canadian government is just as inept and scandal ridden as the UK equivalent.....the difference here is that we don't have the colourful, flamboyant characters; they're all as bland and entertaining as ditchwater. Occasionally I see an advert of TV aimed at employers, urging them to employ immigrants.............doesn't happen in this part of Ontario!

Obviously there are hundreds, thousands, of people who have come to Canada and had a fantastically wonderful life...just as there are immigrants to the UK who have enjoyed the same. The point I'mmaking is this......Canada has the same problems, maybe to a lesser degree, as the UK. Just don't expect it to be a land of streets paved with gold, and Opportunity on every corner. It's bloody hard work, and often soul-destroying.

I would say that you must try it yourself and see...........we're all different with different ideas, ideals and opinions. :)

I can't agree with you more, the Canadian politicians have got no character and are totally as dull as ditchwater, from the prime minister downwards. In fact the only entertaining part of Canadian Politics are the scandals.

Problem is Canada is never in the UK news, as a result no one realises that the same stuff goes on here as back in Britain. The whole immigration issue is just the same as the UK, in fact Canada has a far higher immigrant population, and people who are new arrivals are right at the bottom of the employment pile.

Must depend on where you settle.... I have lived in 3 towns in my 9 years over here (Small bedroom community like Uxbridge, Medium sized like Aurora, and now to a small village on the edge of 2 large cities) I have never found the nastiness in people that you mention in a number of posts here, As for equal rights as immigrants in the workplace, all i can say is i have been with the same company for 9 years. i get 3 weeks vacation and 9 stat holidays. My company has full benefits and i get paid while i am sick. My company has less than 100 employees but at the last company BBQ a few weeks ago we had 24 nationalities working there. I travel all over Ontario and the US in my job, and i can not recall anywhere i have been in Ontario where there is not a immigrant presence there.

"oldbag" your right, there are thousands of people who have come here and loved the place and stayed, there are also some people who seem ping pong all over looking for happiness but will never find it. BUT if you don't try you will never know will you

I think it depends hugely where you settle. Montreal and Quebec have an additional set of politics with a constant battle between French and English speakers, this can sometimes lead to nastiness.

I used to know Uxbridge, Aurora and Brooklin quite well.......we lived in Pickering Village back in the 80's then moved to Port Perry where we spent several very happy years. Used to drive through Brooklin, which was, I think all of four or five house back then, whenever I went down to Sheridan Mall in Pickering. Those were the days when it was a helluva lot easier to be an immigrant over here. :)

Oh yes, I well remember, years ago, driving into Quebec and asking for directions.......no-one would speak to me until I attempted my schoolgirl French on them; then they were all smiles, and very helpful.

It always makes me smile when I see someone on here digging into the UK governement for one reason or the other. They have clearly never heard of the Quebec government Language Police (OLF), funded by taxpayers.

French must have be at least twice as big as English on any sign, Got a company? better make sure your web site has a proper translation or they will be onto you.

I really am glad that Quebec wants to keep it's identity, and not blend in with everyone else in North America but near total discrimination against English speakers? not fair. I'm happy to learn and speak French with the majority but this is complete state sponsored racism.

This exceeds any surveilance, cameras or ID cards that the British Government has in mind, it often becomes very petty. Ok so it may not cover the whole of Canada but Quebec is a good 25% of the nations population. It just shows all countries have their problems
