Anyone moved back and NOT regretted it?!
We're seriously considering moving back to the UK from Oz next year to buy our first house and (hopefully) start a family. Despite having a fantastic 3 years here so far these things seem too daunting to do so far from home and family.
We have an area in mind that we would move back to, which we haven't lived in before but isn't too far from friends and family. We would move back with enough for a deposit on a house that we could afford providing we find work earning what we do here. I don't hate it here or love it there or vice versa - both countries have plus and minus points. I just feel that the life we have been enjoying here has been great for a young couple with no real responsibilities but that it's time to move on to bigger things and these are things that make family support and a sense of 'home' much more important. Anyway, would just be interested to hear from people who had a positive experience in moving back and what their motivations for the move were? Thanks |

Thanks We started a young family over here and there is nothing for them to do, the UK is full of kids smashing things up and being abusive. House prices are through the roof so your children will struggle to get on the ladder. Apart from that the UK is great and if you want to buy my house let me know ! lol We live right by the beach in Sussex if thats where you want to head you can PM me !. Good luck with whatever you do. Re: Anyone moved back and NOT regretted it?!
My hubby and I have spent much time apart due to work commitments since we have been together, but then two great things happened , he was offered a job here in Dubai and the perfect opportunity to be together full time. I had several holidays here before I moved with the children and thought yeah... its ok!
A good friend told me that if you don't settle within 18 months then you never will, and she was right - for me at least. We all sat down and talked at length about returning to Somerset as its where we moved from and we know the area pretty well, my youngest was a baby when we arrived and my eldest is more than happy with decisions we made, we can say that we have experienced living abroad and learning about a new culture. If anything, being with my husband pretty much 24/7 has made us closer and our marriage stronger :) |

Nick There are kids here hanging around with nothing to do but cause havoc and breaking into premises. The house prices are through the roof and people cant afford to buy here either. If they are your only reasons you will be disappointed!! It is a great country here in Oz but not enough for us to stay. Been here 3 yrs and since starting a family we want to be back near family for our daughters sake. Jo |
Re: Anyone moved back and NOT regretted it?!
Funny you should say that as near the beach in Sussex is exactly where we're looking although unfortunately not soon enough to buy your place!
As for getting on the housing ladder we are young ('ish) first time buyers with an average income and see no difference in our opportunities between here and the UK. Depends where you are comparing though I guess - same with the kids and boredom / anti-social behaviour thing. You get exactly the same here - the extent just depends on where you are. Good luck with the move

Thanks I think the UK is a wonderful place and that the press always portray the bad side of things and put the country down. Being close to family and friends is the best thing in the world. Good luck with your move. |

Thanks We've been back for more than 2 years and love it. Don't forget that most people that move back won't be on this site. And I only drop in from time to time to see what BS is being spun about Oz and the UK. |

I also think that many people who move back to the UK wont be posting on here to anywhere near the extent that they did when they were living overseas. Re: Anyone moved back and NOT regretted it?!
believe me, the folk of Warton are parochial. there isn't life past the village boundaries let alone the rest of england. when I first left and moved to London my grandmother called me in a panic one evening. she asked if I was OK because she had seen on the news that there had been a rape in London. Need I say more. I wasn't saying every community in england was parochial merely pointing out that all countries have areas like these and england is not exempt.

I have been back a good few weeks now, and really glad I went to Aus and come back to blighty, it was worth the experience some really good, and some really weird and weirdo situations I found myself in.
I was going to write a story but basically lost interest and cant be arsed. Everyone see's things differnently which I enjoy as it offers diversity in the world. Personally I like England, and can happily live here for the rest of my life, I am english and proud to be, I am proud of the monarchyand the establised society we have, I enjoy the four seasons dark winters and long days of summer, regardless of rain or sun. I will say: One area that I found insulting and abusive was peoples reaction and remarks of going back to the England, as though Aus was the best place in the world, unfortunately it isnt, and whether you like it never will be. Its a nice country but "Just not all that".........there is something missing and at the moment I just cant put my finger on it, but it will come one day I am sure. It has a lot going, but my exerience its transient, everyone moves around it has no roots, limited heritage, as the aussies only want history that is selective just like there personality, friendships and memory. Never been in a society where the $ is obsessive, The culture only exist in a few areas mainly in the cities, the rest is hicky towns and suburbia, anyone with a desire to get away from the country is torn to pieces and treated like a traitor.... Conclusion Worth the experience, lovely to see country. Worth the experience of working for ...enough said.......couldnt have paid for it, even though i have some way or other. Not worth the financial burden I have put myself in. Glad to be back amongst friends and family Glad to have a career once again where I am not prevented by "professional Cieling" and greed. Glad to see educated politicians regardless of what the media pommie bashers say Glad to be putting my kids in English mainstream education regardless of what the media and the pommie bashers say There lots more but I am now bored................ |

Nick Afraid you get that in Aus too: Plenty of bus shelters smashed, graffitti, etc. It depends where you compare here and there. Where we are in South Hants there are few if any notable anti-social behaviour problems - smae as where we lived in Aus (Coogee, Sydney). In other places we've lived there has been more social problems, like other parts of Aus we've visited (e.g. West Sydney, Gold Coast). If you're expecting that to be different you might be disappointed - it depends EXACTLY where you live now and in the future - best to lower your expectations a bit though. On the whole I think Australians are more friendly though, but harder to get to know. As for things to do, you have to be careful there too. The sun is so hot from November to February/March that doing anything outside is not easy. We are finding FAR more things to do in the UK - obviously because it is so more developed there are more different things to do within a short-ish drive. In Aus we found it was far more limited. As for house prices - they will be cheaper in Aus so long as you don't go to Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth. The regions would be cheaper than UK regions, but build quality is often not comparable (single skin, no double glazing, no central heating, etc). We are buying a house in the south of England that is the same price and bigger, and better built (not difficult!) that what we looked at in Sutherlandshire, South Sydney. |

We love being back and more so as time goes on. We feel more alive and stimulated. We didn't realise how bored we were. Of course, there are some things I'd like to import to the UK, like the generally more friendly nature of the average person you meet on the street, the winter, late autumn and early spring, the isolation. But there are also many things I'd leave there, like the hot sun, humidity, the flies, lack of things of interest (to us) to do. On the whole though, we are happier and more fulfilled here. That is not to say the UK is forever for us - I imagine we'll move around a bit more to experience different countries, but moving back to Australia seems more unlikely than trying another (probably northern-)European country. Australia is too limited for us at this time of life, but we may feel differently sometime in the future when we have less desire to focus on our career, friends/family, and visiting parts of Britain/Europe/US. Here is the BUT: If we had no option but to move back to a bad area of the UK, we may feel different. But that is not the case for us. |
Re: Anyone moved back and NOT regretted it?!
We moved back to UK from Oz when I was 6 months pregnant, as, after lots of deliberation, we decided we wanted to raise our family in the UK. The pregnancy wasn't exactly planned so we would have otherwise stayed in Oz a bit longer (how long, I don't know, but the objective for going to Oz in the first place was to work/travel abroad before settling down to have a family, so I think we would have come back eventually - we weren't in love with Australia that much that we thought we wanted to spend the rest of our lives there.)
As for regrets, none whatsoever - none about emigrating and none about coming back. I can't begin to explain how valuable the family support was after birth complications and looking after a new baby. 2 years on, we have another baby, and again, I am so grateful for the family that we have around us. In the last 2 years we have talked at lenght about returning to Oz but have never actually done it. Half the time I feel like I can't be bothered with the upheaval again. If I thought Australia would provide me with a dream environment in which to raise my children, I would go, but I can honestly say that I saw enough crap in Australia to realise that there is no dream place to raise kids. I have no qualms really about raising my children in the UK, and I suppose that I would happily raise them in Oz too. Oz was an experience I'll always cherish - mainly for the travelling we did as carefree newly-weds with no responsibilities. Once we settled into Oz life, it was great but also no different essentially to our life in the UK - I mean in terms of going to work, working long(er) hours, paying bills, traffic congestion, crime, etc etc. Some things were better, some worse - but all much of a muchness really. I will never say never, tho, about going back to Oz. At the moment, I just don't feel the need to 'get out' of the UK. :) |
Re: Anyone moved back and NOT regretted it?!
Thank you for all your feedback - some of the feelings expressed are very familiar to me! I don't relish the stress of uprooting again and worry (as I did coming this way) about whether jobs will work out as we need them to etc. etc. but overall certain that it is the right thing to do and place to be. We'll just have to recapture that reckless bravery we had on moving here, plan as much as we can and go with it!

Hi, We are in Melbourne (Berwick) and have been here nearly 8 months. Its good to know that others feel the same as us, I thought for a minute I was the only one that feels that the UK has more to offer us as a family. Life is not all about big houses and swimming pools. Flights are all booked and we leave on July 12th, how about you? Our house hasn't sold yet but we will leave it in the hands of the agent. Only problem is that we can't buy a house in the UK till we get the money out of this one. Never mind, we are moving to Wiltshire (used to live in Surrey) and we ar ehaving a fresh start. Our daughters have all been enrolled in new schools to start in September. Will be staying with the in laws who have just bought a 150 acre farm in lovely village near Trowbridge. Good luck with your move. Tracy |

Re: Anyone moved back and NOT regretted it?!
Nowhere near the flight booking stage as yet (more saving to do) but that's fine - we have been saving for a year now with a view to buy mid-next year so I've got a nice amount of time to research areas, build up my skills / CV at work (they have just agreed to pay for some pricey courses which is all good!) and make the most of this country before bidding it farewell!

Either East or West of Brighton where we used to rent and our friendship base is. Have been looking at Newhaven and the areas in between to the East and as far as Worthing to the West

I think I have to think about it a bit strategically just like when moving here - I work in the Melbourne CBD because that is where the decently paid emloyment is for me so I have to think in similar terms about the UK and make sure we live in an area that isn't too far away from decent employment zones. Newhaven could work in that sense. A little remote in some ways perhaps but I know I won't feel half as cut off as I would if we bought here in the suburbs (yuk). |

Thanks As in Marie and I came out to Oz for a year in 1991, went home to Oxfordshire when our working visas expired, bought a house, bought a dog, had 2 kids (one of each). We've moved back to Adelaide; is Australia a better place to bring up kids than the UK? Do Australian parents have more time to spend with their kids? Can you enjoy outdoor leisure activities in Oz without costing an arm and a leg, I reckon so |

Yep, most people that have returned and are happy wont post. I wont go into it all as I will be off to work soon. Busy working, taking long pleasant walks with my dogs, great shopping, so much to see and do. Very busy...and loving it. Beautiful country, lovely people. God, we Brits are blessed. :)

Hi
I would just like to say you have encompassed my feelings entirely. I too have decided to move back and only today the hairdresser said well there's more things out here and the weather is miles better etc..These comments from people who have never been to the UK. And since been away from family I'm afraid playing the better weather card means absolutely nothing to me. Thanks if I had any doubts you have made the decision a lot easier. Mandy :)

I left the UK because it is losing its identity. I am proud to be English yet feel increasingly alienated when in my 'home' country. Can't fly the flag, can't have nativity plays etc etc. The countryside, the history, proximity to europe are all wonderful things but not enough for me. Until the loony lefties who have sacrificed the country for political correctness are thrown out I won't be returning. |

Have read articles on this site regularly over the last month and 99% are interesting, insightful and helpful. It's safe to say your contributions are not and seem to be the saddest and chippiest. Can't help feeling you're a closet English wannabe cause there's definitely some weird jealousy thing going on. Think it's time to get over your resentment against the UK mate and get on with your life. |

Life in Oz was far to laid back and my life was filled with endless days on this site. Better than dying of boredom Now I'm to busy to post most days. My life is very busy, too busy some would say, thats why they move.....but give me busy anyday compared with comatose Perth. :D |
