Smile Self importing a new or 2nd car

Over the years I have self imported a number of cars into UK from Holland and Belgium and second hand cars from Germany. These have shown a significant saving even after paying all taxes including VAT on new cars. Travelling over from by boat from Cherbourg to Rosslaire I noticed on the car deck a brand new car on Belgium exports plates and began to wonder if savings can be made by doing a self import either new from the continent or second hand from UK?
