By KERY MURAKAMI
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/301534_dogbiz29.html

Scott Horrell owns the 9 Lb. Hammer bar in Georgetown, and in November
he had had it: Two dogs -- on the same night -- did their business on
the floor.

Barry Rogel, owner of the Deluxe Bar & Grill on Capitol Hill, said
enough after a woman walked in last summer with a pet duck. And it
wasn't even a service duck.

He put up a sign saying no pets allowed, except for service dogs.

The 9 Lb. Hammer went dog-free Jan. 1. QFC put up signs at three
Capitol Hill supermarkets recently, saying, in effect, check your dog
at the door.

And even Dan's Belltown Grocery, right next to the Belltown dog park,
put up a sign two weeks ago saying, "We're sorry but there are no
animals allowed in the store, per health department regulations."

An inspector showed up and issued a warning when somebody complained
about dogs there, said the market's manager, Ed Peters. Last week, he
was thinking of asking the city's parks department to help him install
a dog-hitching post outside his store.

"We knew all the dogs' names," he said.

Hilary Karasz, spokeswoman for Public Health -- Seattle & King County,
said pets in restaurants "are of minimal health concern, because the
presence of a dog presents a low risk of food-borne illness," but some
people just find it annoying when dogs are sniffing around.

And when somebody complains, the health department visits, she said.

"I find it disgusting," said Cedrick Kara as he walked out of the QFC
at Broadway East and East Republican Street one day this week. "I have
a cat at home, and I have hair everywhere. Do I really want to see
that when I'm eating or shopping for food? Some dogs are a bit scary.
It might not be good for old people if they have a heart condition."

Some of the signs are going up because business owners think bringing
in dogs has gone overboard.

"It was fine for a while when there was one dog," said Horrell of the
9 Lb. Hammer. "All of a sudden, there were 10 dogs and they were
peeing and fighting. I just had enough."

Rogel, of the Deluxe, said, "I think some business owners are feeling
frustrated because they feel taken advantage of."

He put up his sign barring pets last summer after the duck incident.

"She got mad and put the duck in her car," Rogel said. "And I'm
looking out the window ... and there's the duck flapping around and
crapping all over the place. Like I really want that in my
restaurant."

Things quieted down after the signs went up, and Rogel has since taken
it down. But just before Christmas, Rogel said, "I look over and
there's a guy at the bar with a parrot. I told him nicely that he
couldn't bring the parrot in here.

"He said, 'Fine, but this parrot has been kicked out of much nicer
places than this.' "

I guess European dogs must be better trained! One scarcely
notices their presence in restaurants until their owners get
up to leave, and the dog appears from where it was quietly
lying under the table. Personally, I'd far rather deal with
fellow patrons' dogs than their obnoxious, undisciplined
children! (But then, European children seem to be better
trained, too.)

Well, they're certainly better-educated, if the OECD reports are to be
believed and I see no reason to doubt them, given the standard of
eduacational attainment displayed by the Seppoes here.

As for dogs, mine goes nearly everywhere with me and waits patiently
outsde businesses that I enter for my re-emergence. She's 45kg and
stands waist-high and has never had a lead or collar on in her life, yet
she is fully under my comtrol and her own self-control. The only reason
a dog ever "misbehaves" is if it is inadequately trained and poorly
managed, just like Americans.

That was an innocent era when we were told we had to win and believed our
governments. And the following casualties occurred for the beliefs of the
then republican party and Richard Nixon , later impeached.

Which only shows how our loyalties to our country can be misused by
politicians, political parties and groups within the country.

We do tend to examine motives more closely now.

Possibly less so now. I always remembered taking our
5 yr daughter to Ecole Maternale in Paris where she
learned French cold turkey. This was in 65-66.

The kids would all run into the play area, and shake
hands with one another and play. When the time to
go into the rooms came, one of the teachers would clap
her hands and the kids would all run and get in line,
the roar of the play ground ended in silence.

The kids would then marched into their respective rooms.

A French dog in a French restaurant better not make trouble.
Their masters would not take them there if that were the
case.

Gaston went out to dinner tonight. No problems.

Under which category are you placing them? (Dogs or
children?) :-)

Dogs are (generally) OK - spent a lot of Christmas Day playing with a
border collie who managed to demolish a few of my sister's garden
gnomes.

Cats are fine, too - especially if they want to sit on me, purr, then
go to sleep.

College students........in a category of their own. Too old to be
"children", too immature to be adults. They don't chase garden gnomes
or fall asleep - they just play with their bloody mobile phones and
have the attention spans of lesser insects.

Well, when either a dog or a child is beaten into submission
in the home they tend to obey orders when they are taken
outside the home, mein Führer.

PIMPL [1]. Yeah, Craig... our "eduacational" system is really
failing.

However, whatever the animal (dogs, tigers, or human
children) they respond best to affection! No parent/animal
trainer of any intelligence relies upon intimidation,
anymore. (Modern animal training consists of rewarding
"good" behaviour, not punishing "bad".) Also, human children
have even been shown to respond to appeals to reason -
assuming their parents are capable of such.
