Hello again,
Thanks to all of you for your replies, although I'm still a bit
confused as to where to stay as everyone (understandably) has
different opinons! I'm only staying in Swtizerland for about 4 days.
Is the weather as unpredictable in June as other times of the year?
Just had a question about the Berner Oberland rail pass if anyone can
help me. I'm planning to buy a Eurail Selectpass (from Australia)
that supposedly gives you unlimited rail travel in your chosen
country/ies. Does anyone know if this covers rail travel in the
Berner Oberland area?
Thanks again.

Ten years ago we stayed at Walter Mitter's Hotel in Gimmelwald. It has
since been featured on Rick Steves' show. It was rustic, but comfortable.=
It would be a bit of a stretch to call Gimmelwald a town, but it is well
worth seeing. The scenery is magnificent.

Early June may be unpleasant snowmelting time at the highest altitudes but
otherwise it's a nice month.

No ,only up to Interlaken as the longest. Swiss pass is better but you
still have to pay for Wengen-Grindelwald-Jungfraujoch at a discount.

Two years ago when I was researching for a trip to Switzerland I came
accross a number of accommodation/transport/entry fees packages
offered by Tourism Switzerland. I did not go through with these as I
had a lease motor vehicle for my trip but they looked very attractive.
Something like - transport from your entry point into Switzerland -
two or three nights accommodation - excursions to some of the
highlights - transport to your exit point.
I tried to find them just now on the website of the Swiss tourism
authority http://www.switzerlandtourism.ch but couldn't. Maybe an
email to [email protected] will get some results.
Altrenatively if you wish to go somewhere cheaper try the youth hostel
in Grindelwald!
Happy travelling.

During my four-night stay in June of 2000, we had cold, rainy weather for
several days, lots of fog, and then finally one day of nice sunny weather at
the end. It's still well worth the trip though. Don't stay far away from the
area such as Interlocken. The suggestion to stay in Bern was just plain
strange. The trains in the Jungfrau region get VERY crowded this time of year,
so you will spend way too much time waiting for a train or taking an alternate
route if you don't stay right where you want to do your visiting. Again,
Lauterbrunen is perfect for this and gives you short distances to everything
you would want to see (plus there is a lot to see right there in town).

I agree entirely with the above posting. Bern is too far away and if the
weather is bad it is still only worth one day there. About 5 minutes from
Interlaken by train on the way to Lauterbrunnen there is a nice little
village called Wilderswil which could be a good base (I have stayed there
and there are two pleasant hotels). It is also the Station for the Schynegge
Platte cog railway, from which there are spectacular views. But
Lauterbrunnen is only about 25 minutes by train from Interlaken and is an
excellent base for exploring the region and it has some good,
moderately-priced, hotels.

I would have to agree with the poster who selected Lauterbrunnen. We
stayed in Interlaken our first trip but took excursions with the
Oberland Pass to all the other areas mentioned. Murren, Wengen and
Grindelwald were awesome for scenery but we found Lauterbrunnen to be
more convenient for quick connections to other areas via rail and bus
while staying in the Jungfrau. With the Oberland Pass......any place
you stay will get you to spectacular scenery wihin minutes. The Swiss
Rail System was fantastic!! Have a great trip!

As for me, I would not recommend Lauterbrunnen. This village is on the bottom of the valley
and enjoys much less sun than the higher places and has a very limited choice of hotel
accomodation. My preference in this region (I spent annual vacations in Grindelwald during my
childhood and schoolyears): MUERREN is probably the prettiest villag, a sun terrace resort,
all in Swiss chalet style, without access by car. From Muerren, you can take the cablecar to the
turntable restaurant on the Schilthorn (James Bond was there...): a most spectacular view,
book a table for dinner, you have never seen a more beautiful sunset).
GRINDELWALD is very beautiful too. The Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are impressive
mountains, but I always think that the Matterhorn - Grindelwald's symbol - os the most beautiful
peak (actually it's a double peak). Grindelwald is much larger than Muerren, you got more
choice of restaurants and night life, if you need that. If you are fit, then you might take the chairlift
to First, then walk to the Faulhorn (some 2300 m asl), stay in a dormitory overnight, then
continue the next morning to Schynige Platte and return by cog railway via Wilderswil to
Grindelwald. And your lungs willappreciate the change.
Other nice towns in the region include BRIENZ, MEIRINGEN or WENGEN.

I agree. Go smaller and quieter than Grindelwald. See my article at

Hi-
I live in Bern- its a nice city to visit. Some good museums, a few good restaurants. So where you stay depends on what you like- Bern is a city and Interlaken is really more of a big touristic village. But Interlaken is closer to the mountains and the lakes.
you can email me directly at [email protected] if you want more specifics about travel in the area.
Safe travels.
