Hi,
I'm planning a trip to Switzerland in June and want to stay somewhere
in the Jungfrau region. Can anyone tell me which town of the
following has the nicest views and is the best place to stay:
Interlaken, Mürren, Wengen, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and Gimmelwald.
Also, if anyone can recommend any good accommodation in these towns
that would be very helpful. Thanks.

IMHO the best views can be obtained from Murren but the hotels are rather
expensive. I stay regularly in Wengen at the excellent Hotel Wengenerhof
(which has a web site). Wengen is a delightful large village with
magnificent views of the Alps. Get a Berner Oberland rail pass and the
entire region is within easy travelling range.

By no means the most atmospheric, but staying in Interlaken will be
immeasurably the easiest for fixing transport in all directions.

this place is great and you have to take a cable car to get there.
How to Get from Interlaken Ost to Gimmelwald:
At the Interlaken Ost station, board the front car of the train for
Lauterbrunnen. (The rear car goes to Grindelwald.)
At Lauterbrunnen, there is a Post Coach (in the evening, a Schilthornbahn
Coach) waiting across the street in front of the tourist office going to the
Schilthorn cable car station at Stechelberg.
The first cable cable car stop is Gimmelwald. Walk into the village and
follow the path up the hill. A sign points to "Hotel Mittaghorn."
You can also take a less steep but longer path, following the main road,
which also leads to the Hotel Mittaghorn. This walk takes about 20 minutes.
If you have heavy luggage that you do not need, you can check it in lockers
in Lauterbrunnen. If you leave your luggage in the locker more than 24
hours, there will be a surcharge. If your luggage is too large to fit in the
locker, you can leave it at the counter at the station.

I would definitley stay in Lauterbrunnen. With its twin waterfalls and its
stunning position in the valley, it is an absolutely gorgeous place. It is also
very conveniently located, and provides easy access to Murren, Kleine
Scheidegg, and Jungfraujoch. I stayed in Grindelwald the last time I visited
the area, but I wished I had stayed in Lauterbrunnen because Grindelwald is too
far from everything, requiring a lot of long (and often extremely crowded)
train rides. If you're looking for top-notch accommodations, however, you
cannot beat the Grand Hotel Regina in Grindelwald. It's insanely expensive, but
the service you'll get there is out of this world. If that's not why you're
going though, Lauterbrunnen is by far the best place to stay. Don't hesitate to
drop me a line with any questions about the area. I loved my stay there and I'd
be happy to give you any advice I can.

I stayed in a hotel in Grindelwald. Out of a picture window that I could
see from my bed, the Jungfrau towered, beginning literally accross the
street. It was one of the most magnificant sites I've ever seen-
especially from bed.
Unfortunately, the name escapes me at the moment. A fairly simple name,
simple hotel, a chicken restaurant on the first floor.
Ring a bell with anyone?
In any case- that whole area is an incredible treat. Oh- and I wouldn't
stay in one of the larger towns like Interlaken. Even Grindelwald is
pushing it. The tiny towns are so picturesque- but the view from this
hotel did make everything worth it!
Enjoy-

I think the prettiest villages (which are all car free) are Mürren,
Wengen and Gimmelwald. The last one is very small with only one hotel
I think. Of the other two, I like Mürren best. They all three are up
high above the valley reached by cable car or train. Mürren and
Gimmelwald have good views of the 3 big alps, Monch, Eiger and
Jungfrau.
Have fun!

I visited the Jungfrau region last year. Gorgeous area! I stayed in
Interlaken and the train ride in from Lucerne was magnificent.
Unfortunately, the area was struck down by poor weather during the
couple of days that I was there, so I did not manage to get to the
Jungfrau itself. I ended up going to the top of the Schilthorn
instead, which was quite nice.
I stayed at the Hotel Alphorn while I
was there. The shower was tiny, but the people who run the place were
very friendly and the room was adequate for my needs. I paid a rate of
90 CHF a night for a single, which I found to be reasonable (breakfast
is included).
How long will you be in the area? The weather there is terribly
unpredictable. I was told by a few locals that it's often a better
idea to stay in a city like Lucerne (another beautiful place), and
when the forecast for the Jungfrau region is good, hop on a train to
the area. It's about a 3-hr train ride if I remember correctly. Of
course, this requires you to be flexible in your scheduling, which I
was not last year.
The other towns you mentioned besides Interlaken are smaller and more
isolated; you pass through them on your way up to the mountains. Think
of Interlaken as the gateway to the Jungfrau region. I personally
preferred to stay in a larger town with more entertainment options
available.
Good luck and make sure to bring plenty of film! I can't wait to go
back myself.

I can highly recommend the Hotel Lotschberg and its companion
accomodations next door called Suzie's Bed and Breakfast for a very
well-priced modest stay in Interlaken. They have discounts for longer
stays and my off season rate was only around $35 a night, with
breakfast.
It is very quiet yet less than a 5 minute walk to the train station
where you can hook up to frequent trains going almost anywhere in
Switzerland. Interlaken is "touristy" but there are still some back
street charms to it if you take your time to stroll around the
side-streets and across the river.
Be sure to think about doing the Brienzer Rothorn hike if you want to
see one of the hikes labeled as The 50 Most Beautiful Hikes in
Switzerland.

Another place to consider is Beatenburg, which is on the other side of
Interlaken. You take a cable way to get up to it, but the views of the
Alps across the lake are stunning and there is wonderful hiking around
this part of the mountains. It is a "sleeper" alternative to being
right in the middle of the Jungfrau area.

....and you absolutely MUST go to the waterfall called Truemmelbachfalle- it courses down inside the mountain and when you stand next to it you can feel the ground shaking.......wear your raincoat....
Magnificent area- pray for snow and spring rains for better waterfall viewing in the Lauterbrunnen Valley....
safe travels

Would it make sense to stay in Bern? I've heard Bern is a lot more
interesting than Interlaken. How long would it take to make day trips
to the Jungfrau from Bern?
