Clearly given that when this issue crops up on a regular basis the
result is anything but clear!

It wasn't even 25C in the shade in February 2005 for most of the time
that we were there.

Mule train maybe. I think the locals broke the nice railways that
Cecil Rhodes built for them.

Which simply shows that being in the EU is not connected with being on
the continent. Try looking at a map.

UK and Ireland are not on the continent, but are clearly part of
Europe.

They are at least reasonably adjacent to Europe. Instead of adjacent to
Asia as Cyprus is. As I said earlier Malta is a bit difficult since it
is pretty well centered between Europe & Africa.

The culture of both is European and not Asian. Malta is no further
from Italy than Cherbourg is from the IOW.

Following up to Frank F. Matthews
>> UK and Ireland are not on the continent, but are clearly part of

"continental Europe" is one expression, "Europe" is another. The
latter includes the British Isles and Scandinavia according to my
dictionary.
>They are at least reasonably adjacent to Europe.
Martin does not seem to understand the difference between
political and physical geography, (the questioner used the term
Europe, not EU).
The Canaries are in the EU politically and are islands associated
physically to Africa, if that helps.
Is this the tiredest argument we have here?
