visa requirements for UK Citizens visiting France for a short stay
Are there any visa requirements? I doubt it, but...
Also I have heard that one needs a 10 year UK Passport else entry to France will be
refused .....
Did ring the French Embassy today, but it rang off.

This is true. Cheaper one year visitors passport abolished some years ago.

No problem whatsoever if you're a UK citizen on a British passport. I cross via the
Channel Tunnel fairly frequently and half the time the French passport control bit is
empty - no doubt due to fag breaks.
One time my friend left his passport at home - got into France ok because the French
weren't there. The hardest bit was getting back into the UK but he just sweet-talked
the British customs man and he waved us through.

Don't need a visa. Could go & live & work there if you wanted to, absolutely no
problem. You will need passport though.

Some years ago my cousin forgot his passport for a ferry crossing and even though it
was still in the days when passports were checked on the way out, he was allowed to
go through at his own risk that he wouldn't be allowed into France.
The French were happy to let him pass in both directions on his driving licence, but
it took him a 15 minute interview to get back into the UK.

Not if you're a British citizen with right of abode in the UK (unlike some of the
more obscure types of British citizenship left over from imperial times).

You need a full 10 year UK Passport to visit ANY other country except the Republic

A person with the nationality status "British Citizen" automatically has right of
abode in the UK.

citizens of the more regimented countries of the EU do. Therefore a passport is
needed to prove identity on entry to an EU country.

The rationale being that we in the UK do not have a national identity card as the
citizens of the more regimented countries of the EU do. Therefore a passport is
needed to prove identity on entry to an EU country.
