Being a UKian, perhaps the word "downtown" isn't quite as loaded
with meaning for me: it's not a word we use much. So I took the
meaning from the phrase "modern city" to guess what the OP meant.

No. I sent them an E-mail message inquiring about prices.

At first reading, I had no idea what he meant by "downtown
Venice." Then it occurred to me that just maybe he meant
"Mestre." Then on thinking about it, I thought that made no
sense, and he couldn't possibly have meant that.
So at this point, I don't know what he meant, and would prefer
not to guess.

Some people have great difficulty picking up irony. When I read what
Mary wrote, I couldn't imagine it being anything but that.
Interestingly, Phred simply assumed her to be very stupid.

I would take it as meaning the most expensive part of the city,
usually the CBD. In Venice, that would be somewhere near St Marks
Square.

OK, looking forward to one of your long entertaining reports about Venice.

I agree, we passed through on the way from Chioggia (hint) wasnt
impressed. As beaches go, its nothing special at all.

It's a great apartment -- very good location, well-furnished and
equipped, well maintained, good heating system (important in the last
few days), pleasant proprietor. The website implies that it can
accommodate four people, and it can -- but it's far better as
comfortable accommodation for two.
On the basis of this experience, I'd trust Bob Fusillo's
recommendations on accommodation. Thanks, Bob.
