Is the UK the only country on the planet that charges hotel rates per
person, as opposed to per room, which seems to be the norm on the Continent.
Makes UK travel bloody expensive in my view, and I'm surprised anybody wants
to come here because of this system.

The reason it's advertised as per person, rather than per room is
because it's so expensive, it's not what makes it expensive.
The cheaper places in the UK also list per room - it's all down to
making the advertised price appear not pyshcologically too high.

Not true in my experience. This is (was?) also true of Japanese ryokans, and
was true in parts of Germany or some hotels there some years back (may not
be true any more though).

That's the norm in both Germany and the Netherlands.

I've seen a lot of Swiss hotels advertising a price per person.
It does get confusing sometimes trying to figure out what basis
someone is using.
