Default the tube of rome

Hi everybody,

I heard that the underground in Rome is not very secure, there are a lot of
robberies. Could anybody tell me something about that?

I will rest in a camping outside the city caller Tiber, do you know if it's
very far?
Did anybody know it?

Thank You

It's no different than any other large city. There may be robberies in
the metro, but I've used it frequently and never had a problem.

Be aware of your surroundings and keep your valuables well protected.
Be especially careful of people who approach you closely, either to
help you or to show you something.

A friend of my daughter once had someone throw shit at her (I mean
that literally) and then another nice person approached her to help
her clean up. This "helpful" stranger made off with her purse as soon
as she put it down. This is a variation of a trick that's found all
over the world. If something like this happens, say quite loudly,
"Thank you, I'm all right. I DON'T WANT HELP." It doesn't matter what
language you speak, the malefactor doesn't want to attract attention
and will go away if you are making enough noise.

Likewise if someone approaches you closely to show you something. In
this case, make some noise and also swing around quickly to see if
there's someone else behind you.

I want to emphasize again that these are tricks that are used in many
cities, not just Rome. I have wandered all over Rome at all hours of
the night and never had any unpleasant experiences. My daughter lived
in Rome for six months, and also never had any unpleasant experiences,
and of all her friends and classmates, there was only the one incident
I mentioned above.

Watch out for pick pockets at Trevi Fountain trying to sell you a rose,
whilst his mate slips up behind you and there goes you wallet etc.

Wear a money belt to prevent pickpocketing, and when possible try to
keep your bags on your person instead of on the ground. If you arrive
in the city late at night and you have a lot of suitcases, you might
consider taking a taxi to your hotel instead of the train.

The worst problems are in and around Termini station, around the Trevi
Fountain (where there is often a huge crowd gathered around the
fountain so it's easy for someone to grab a wallet or bag without being
noticed), and in the Piazza Navona (where a lot of tourists stop to
rest and where a thief can easily escape down side streets).

But crime is not really more of a problem in Rome than in most other
major world cities, violent incidents are extremely rare, and the vast
majority of visitors have no problem at all.

BTW, you'll see people in Gladiator Costumes hanging around outside the
Colosseum and some other tourist sites. Do not take pictures of them
unless you are willing to pay them.

I think it's somewhere along the Tevere, because Tiber is the English
for Tevere.

I think you can see from the map that it's pretty far from the city
center. They say 15 minutes from the city, but you have to take a
metro and then a commuter train, and I don't see how you could make it
in 15 minutes. You could spend more than 15 minutes just waiting for
trains, and I have a feeling that the commuter train doesn't run very
often late at night.

True... One of the hostels I considered last year and clearly 'out of
the loop' so far a Rome goes. I can definitely recommend 'gullivers
house' hostel right in Rome at nearly the same price; if you can live
within the rules... Check em' out on any of the hostel booking sites.

So far a crime in Rome goes... Three out of the Eight women at gullivers
while I was there reported criminal attempts (theft) between Termini and
Trevi; a retired professor I met at Ostia Antica had his back pocket
picked (of inconsequential papers) on the return metro train at the
Pyramid stop... Only in Rome for Four days so I'm unsure what fair
statistical crime info my experience might yield...<g>.. but I would
have no hesitation to return; all my wits about me.

It IS a long way. The train from Roma- Viterbo station, which adjoins the
metro Flaminio stop, runs every 15 min or so, with the last train around 11
pm. Journey to Prima Porta is around 20 min.
As for safety, yes, pick-pocketing is prevalent on the metro (less on the
trains as they aren't as crowded except at rush hours). Just come back from
Rome, and a policeman was at a metro station pleading with visitors to take
care of their valuables. You see people carry their rucksacks and shoulder
bags on the front, to prevent thefts. Just take basic precautions, use a
money belt for cash and valuables, and you have little to worry about.
