Better ask the airline directly. Even if someone here guesses
correctly for one airline, might be different for others.

I guess it makes joining the mile high club a bit more comfortable :-)

I always find those "half-lays" very frustrating too.

Yes, embarrassment. It's a commodity that seems to be in short supply

This is what happened to me:

On a flight from Boston to Portland OR, my sister was in business class (Delta) flying on an upgrade from her frequent flier miles, while my mom and I were in steerage. She mentioned to the FA that our dad is a retired Western (Delta bought out Western) pilot. Said she couldn't understand why his wife and other daughter had to be in coach when there were open seats in BC. The FA agreed, and she came back and escorted us up to BC for the remainder of the flight. You might try having your friend mention that your dad (?) is a retired pilot for the airline. Might just work.
