Timo, thanks for the details. I like to keep current with the
trains from Helsinki to St. Petersburg. A three-hour trip would
be wonderful. Another four hours to Moscow is also great, as
SVO has the worst passport control I have ever seen (very long
lines).

Both companies are keeping a low profile on this matter.A few years ago
there was some talk of VR Pendolino (the dual voltage version, which exists
already but has not been ordered by VR) and the Russian Sokol (officially
abandoned a couple of months ago as a failure). It is difficult to imagine
any EMU set being used soon.
The present Sibelius cars are from the 60-s and 70-s so they have to be
replaced soon. VR has nice new fully air-conditioned and pressurized Talgo
double-deckers http://www.saunalahti.fi/~rautatie/rstock/DDesite.pdf used on
domestic IC2 services, but the doors are too low for Russian platforms. The
present normal IC cars are the only suitable ones available now, their max.
speed is 160 km/h - not quite enough.
Russians use brand-new sleepers on the Helsinki-Moscow run, day-time cars
are re-fitted sleepers and are not the most comfortable ones possible.

How much safe is it to travel alone in the streets of St.PB and
Moscow. Any caveats?? I heard of racial attacks and shootings..Btw, I
am an Indian.
