The big difference is not having to worry about where to go though.
There are a few non-smoking pubs in Manchester, and a few of them are
not bad- but you often have to make an effort to go there, say after a
concert etc.

I passed the Cornerhouse tonight (indie cinema with smoky bar area next
to the ticket windows- nice!) and didn't even see any signs...

Canal Street haven't got many signs yet, but lots of outside
ashtrays/ciggie bins.

It's takes an expat like Mr Newport to really find the pulse.

A last cigarette?

Smoking is finally dying it's own death, and it hasn't gone without a
fight! Damn, if corporations could keep it alive for decades, what's
so wrong about governments helping it end?

Ever tried to get from Whitby to Scarborough by public transport in the
evening?

I did.

Once...

In some American states such as my own Arizona the anti-smoking
law was passed by a public referendum, a plebescite, so to speak,
and not without a fight by the tobacco and tavern industries,
which sponsored a much watered-down opposing version.

Although enforcement must be by the state government, it was the
people who wanted the anti-smoking law.

I have a feeling that compliance with the signage requirements is
going to be rather slow. (Not that the signage really matters once the
reality of the ban sinks into public consciousness.)

I suspect in these instances, they're just leaving it until the very
last minute- they're very visible pubs/bars after all.

And another bus at this end, where the last bus is at 9:00pm...

So I'd be leaving the pub just after opening time...

Look, you just might get me as far as Blakey Ridge once in a blue moon for
a drink, but Whitby for anything but ogling the females on a vampire
weekend is a no-no

That's because everyone in Whitby's asleep by 9pm.

There is an amazingly frequent bus service between Whitby and Middlesbrough.

What's wrong with a fantasy now and again?

Anyway, they're not dressed like that because it's either comfortable or
