For those avid contributors to the interminable threads on this NG on the
subject of "Is it save to go to Naples" here is a little something,
to gladden your harts, gleaned from this mornings "Glasgow Herald" I have
pasted it in as it doesn't have a link.
Start of article:
Apology to tourist beaten up after chasing muggers
NAPLES
THE mayor of Naples has apologised to an American tourist beaten up by
locals after he gave chase to two muggers in the southern Italian city.
Matthew Godfrey from Utah tried to pursue thieves who snatched his camera
while he photographed a monument. But instead of helping the victim,
bystanders grabbed him and beat him up, police said.
The suspected thieves were later arrested. Leonardo Impegno, head of the
local council, condemned the "hateful" incident.
"I have officially invited Matthew, who has left to continue his travels,
to return to Naples soon to eat a pizza together," he said.
Rosa Russo Iervolino, mayor, said the action of the locals in protecting the
criminals darkened the city's
name.-Reuters

Let me say this about Naples . I live both in the States and in Rome.
the last time I was IN Naples was more than 25 yrs ago.
Naples is a very high crime area with Huge unemployment . And the
Neopolitans don't want to change that. Crime and Unemployment is a way
of life there. Now not for everyone but for at least half . Now in
their defense Neopolitans are some of the most genuine and accepting
people in Italy. Its just they don't like outsiders.
. I tell anyone I know to stay away from Naples. Now I do go to the
Amalfi coast, Sorrento Positano ,Capri and every year to Pompei but
....Naples... Forget it..
As far as being invited to eat pizza by the Mayor . I tell her Sure
let have Pizza ... in Rome.
Ever wonder why most tours leave out Naples? I hate even driving near
it.

Did the mayor buy him a new camera? Did she pay his medical
bills? Apologies are worthless.

According to Italian news, they weren't bystanders, they were the
mugger's relatives.

I had a feeling it must have been something like that. When I read the
story, I thought, they must have run to their friends/back up.

Ah well, that makes it all right then. I hope Mr. Godfrey, from Utah, sees
it in the same light and stops making a fuss.

Well, _that's_ OK then. Have the relatives been arrested?

no, but its different, if you persue a bag snatcher you run the
risk of running into backup.

If you will persist in responding to almost everything which is posted on
this NG, could you, at least, try contributing something useful and
pertinent by way of a change.
As for your friend Barbara, I am unable to say since I dumped her in the
rubbish bin a long time ago and only have to look at her drivel when
someone, like you, cites her posts.
I shouldn't bother to waste any effort to reply to this as you have now
joined her in the 'Block Sender' dump.

That's OK, I'll answer anyway, because I'm sure someone who is not in your
rubbish bin, will reply & then you will see this:
Why don't people (ie. You) take their own advice?
