Huh? Never head of either of them! (Obviously neither is

I'm sure you've heard of Thompson. He plays the boss District
Attorney on "Law and Order". And he is showing rather strongly in
the polls for someone who hasn't really announced much of an
intention.

In which "incarnation"? Along with current season
broadcasts and re-broadcasts, repeats of the show are still
going strong on a couple of cable channels, and there have
been FOUR D.A.'s since its inception - two men, two women.
(Although it says something about the gullibility of the
American public, if an actor's "political experience" in
his/her role on a TV show influences voters should he/she
run for office in the real world!)

Um. You mean Fred Thompson, former United States Senator
(R-Tenn)?

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Dalton_Thompson
He'd make a good candidate, but he's too conservative for me.

Why not? Think about it.
Which professions immediately come to mind if the job
description includes "ability to lie believably and with
sincerity"?
Maybe I'm just a cynic; but I can't think of many that would
topple politics and acting from the top of my list. Maybe
lawyer would be a close third...
Worked for Ronnie and the governator:-)

And it was Reagan that beat him. See above where I said "only Reagan
was able to change that". 8 years of Eisenhower (R), 8 years of
Kennedy/Johnson (D), 8 years of Nixon/Ford (R), then the disruption
with 4 years of Carter (D) and 12 years of Reagan/Bush (R), then back
to normal 8 years of Clinton (D) and 8 years of Bush (R).

Unfortunately, you make a valid point! (Perhaps, given an
electorate as "informed" as that, we deserve whatever we
get.) You left out evangelical preachers - they too, along
with actors, politicians and lawyers, excell in the "ability
to lie believably and with sincerity".
