Default Recommended Loire Valley itinerary?

We are honeymooning in France in early October, with part of the trip
driving from Aix to Normandy; we're seeking input on the 'must see'
elements.

We have about four days for this Aix-Normandy drive and would
appreciate any input on what you would consider the must-sees, great
places to stay, etc. (We are history/quaint village/meet-the-people
type of vacationers - not hugely into wine or big cities)

I'm told Loire is where some of the great chateaux are, and of course
Mont St. Michel is on the route, but I know we need to do more
research...

We're in the process of researching maps and routes so would love any
guidance this group has. We actually have additional nights in Aix
(before) and Paris after this drive, so feel free to chime in with
Provence and/or Paris guidance as well.

Thanks in advance!

We did something similar last year. Drove from St Tropez area to St Malo in
4 days.
Drove past Aix thence via Avignon (did not stop - seen it before) to Pont du
Gard. Thence to Rodez via Millau (check out the highestest bridge in the
world - awesome). Second day toSarlat via Beaulieu sur Dordogne. Stayed an
extra night there. Last day to St Malo.
If we were to do the same sort of thing again I think we would try to visit
Le Puy en Velay.

Most important I think is not to try to do too much.

From your description of yourself I doubt whether you would really like the
chateaux of the Loire anyway.

Agreed.

How do you arrive at that conclusion? There is rather more to the
Loire Valley than wine and big cities.

As in Aix-en-Provence? If so, you're looking at about 12 hours of driving,
so more than 1/4 of your time is gone from the start. We spent about 4
days driving through Normandy and the Loire last June, and it was fairly
hectic.

    > I'm told Loire is where some of the great chateaux are, and of course

Pick a few chateaus that interest you; there are so many in the area that
you could easily spend 4 days there alone. We visited Chenonceaux and
Chambord, and the gardens in Villandry. Chambord is definitely a must-see;
Chenonceaux makes a great picture but wasn't as impressive inside. The
Villandry gardens are very nice. The Loire valley makes for a nice drive
anyway, and the chicken tarragon at the Au Gateau de Breton in the town of
Chenonceaux was great!

We really liked the town of Fougeres, not too far from Mont St Michel. We
stayed at the Les Voyageurs hotel which was a great value but otherwise
unspectacular. If you can manage to book one of the rooms on Le Mont,
that'd be cool - book early. We needed a triple room, and had no luck even
booking 6 months early. Dinan would also be a nice place to visit and/or
stay, also fairly nearby.

Even if you're not a big patriot, the D-day area of Normandy (and the
cemetary) is worth a visit. We avoided the direct routes and spent a
couple of hours driving along the coastline, passing through some
wonderful little towns, well-kept farms with many sleepy cows, and coastal
views, stopping as we felt like it.

We also stayed in Honfleur, and although its a nice town (particularly if
you like expensive seafood) it didn't seem to be deserving of the crowds
that swarmed its streets. Rouen is good for a couple of hours; the
cathedral is massive and beautiful (no doubt partly why Monet painted it
so much), but the old town is just a shopping area now.

Search groups.google.com for this newsgroup and more specifically
Normandy, and you should find a trip report I wrote.

The site is not very enticing, is it? And it covers only part of what
is commonly agreed to be the Loire Valley so far as tourism goes.

I would suggest that the OP check out Chinon and Amboise as possible
overnight stops. In addition to the chateaux already mentioned, I
would add Ussé and Azay-le-Rideau as great backdrops for those photos
to show the future children.

It seems inconprehensible to me that you could bypass Avignon or Arles
with my advice going to Avignon first. Certainly the Luberon mountains
have a draw. Amboise is be far and away my personal favorite for the
Oire Valley although I would seriously consider Chinon as I love the
view from the old fortress (and the local wines are quite good, make an
excepjtion and try some)

As to whether Mont St. Michel is actually on the way to Normandy from
Aix it depends on your routing, Whatever routing you choose, Chartres is
on my must list as well. Then there is Honfleur. Truth is any of the
three areas you have mentioned could be the honeymoon in and of itself

The Mont is in Normandy! (Just about).

I found the .pdf's brochures to be reasonable as a starting point.

Did you look at those ?

Exactly and to get there requires a lot more driving than the direct route
to Normandy.

No. I didn't persist, because the site didn't appeal to me. Where are
the pdfs hidden?

I wasn't researching, because I know the Loire Valley moderately well,
just looking in to see if there was anything of particular interest to
me.

It really depends on where in Normandy you are going. For many, the
Mont St Michel is the prime destination in the region.

They are not hidden, Brochures are clearly indicated on the front page
and many others as well.

Again, it is a general interest site... but I believe as the marketing
agent for the region... they have a good idea of what the average
visitor might be interested in.

Well, 'Brochure' is there, but that's not necessarily a clear link for
the pdf files- it's a pretty cluttered site, and the pdfs are butt-ugly,
in inverse proportion to the area, really.
