Passes must be bought abroad.

Note however that you need to do quite a lot of train travel to make
these worthwhile. Ordinary point-to-point rail fares are usually
cheaper if bought in the UK

Also you have not stated your ages. If you are sixty plus you can buy a
Senior Rail Card (£20) that will give you 34% off most tickets. Be aware
that there are certain time and area restrictions - but for all that well
worth the £20.

But these are the most expensive type. Substantial savings can be made by
buying in advance.

However beware, British Rail fares will drive you completely insane if you
look at them too closely

Especailly if one of the railcards works for you (it will cover
your fellow travelers as well).

For most trips over around 100 miles, the cheapest fares are indeed
available if you book in advance and if you can commit yourself in
advance to a particular train. Also the best value is usually
available for return tickets (round-trip tickets in American English)
which often only cost a little more than single tickets (one-way in
American) for the same trip.

These chaper fares are not usually sold by agents outside the UK.
However you can order them by phone or on-line through
http://www.thetrainline.com/ or one of the train companies' web
sites, and arrange to collect them when you arrive in the UK.
